  • Reviving Pipe Tobacco

I some how managed to get a bunch of my pipe tobaccos too dry for my liking. So I googled and read a lot and found that most methods didn?t seem quite right. With the exception of a few genuine dumbass ideas that are out there each method had value and reason in their approach, but none seemed to fit exactly my needs.

Bringing together a pinch of common sense and the best of the approaches this is what I have done. It?s worked for me as I have quite a lot of small plastic pots with anything from a single bowlful through to 15-30grams worth.

So... here it is I laid out the pots with open tops in a tray. Then lay out paper towels big enough to lay over the top of the pots - enough to cover them. Using a spray gun moister the paper towels with like warm tap water. Add another layer on top and spray again. Then add one final layer and moisten again. Pick up and lay over the top of your pots.

I?d been keeping the pots in zip lock bags. I lay these over the top of the paper towels. Then leave the tray out in a warm room and let the science do it?s thing!

It is worth checking every few hours to see how your baccy is getting along. Mine took about 5 hours to get to a pleasingly rehydrates state.

The most helpful guide I had was that if you pinch your tobacco and is crumbles it is too dry. If you pinch it and it just holds together in its own, then it?s ideal.

I have some 72/75 boveda which I bought years back for a leaky humidor. I don?t need them for my cigars these days, so will be popping them in the big zip lock bags that I keep my pots in. Hopefully this will stave off future drying out. But for now I have had a few lovely afternoons with part of the house smelling gloriously of re-awakening pipe tobacco!

A few naff pics of one of the batches of revival work!

Was the tobacco stored in original tins or jars?

This lot was samples in ziplock baggies, and then in these pots (with lids on). Stuff in original tins was fine.

my rehydrating efforts have worked really well. I just need to keep them humid now... which ought not to be beyond me seeing as i manage it for x hundred cigars !

good shout i will likely have to empl;oy this at some point!

Im surprised its not the done thing to have pipe tobacco in some sort of humidor, seems people just 'cellar' full tins. But its a bit of a bugger if you dont smoke 4 bowls a day and are into a bit of sampling, Im going for zippy bags and jam/ball jars for storage. Only time will tell i guess and i must get on amazon and order some jars!!

I use small ball jars for most of my pipe tobacco stock and vacuum seal them after each use - seems to work a treat
