  • Rum Newbie

As the title suggests i'm a rum newbie.

I'm looking to get into rum as a sipping drink and to go with cigars - i'm very much into my whisky currently but do like a sweeter drink. I tried the Havana Club Anejo Especial and really liked it and have seen deals in supermarkets for it for around ?20 but i've held off picking up a bottle yet.

Any other suggestions to pick up as a newbie?

    Thanks
    Dave

Havanna Club 7 is a lot better than the Anejo Diplomatico Reserva is also nice. At the more expensive end I?m partial to a Zacapa.

I can highly recommend Bacardi 8. I was amazed by this the first time I tried it. Don't be put off by the Bacardi name; it's rich, smooth and just sweet enough. I'm never without a bottle and it's generally available for under ?30

Thank you all for the advice! Off to the land of a big supermarket this weekend so will see what is on the shelves there! I shall report back

There's not usually a good selection of quality rums in the supermarkets. Rumbullion is nice but Diplomatico is lovely. Just finishing the last of my bottle tonight. Amazon will deliver it as you won't find it on the shelves.

As a fellow newbie, I like the Plantation 5 YO. Picked it up as my first sipping rum and as an alternative to whiskey which doesn't break the bank, I really enjoy it. I may look at stretching to the Plantation XO next to see how that compares.

X2 for Plantation XO, just great
Zacapa XO is great too, but that is a little over 100?

I'm not a big rum drinker..... but I do like my mojitos and Cuba libres..... saying that, I've always got a couple of bottles in my drinks cabinet! I'd recommend:
havana club anejo especial (Tesco normally have it on offer for around ?16)
havana club 7 yr old (again, my Tesco does it for ?22)
Appleton estate (because it's lovely and decently priced at around ?20+ a bottle)
diplomaticos (because it's so well liked around here on this forum and pairs up perfectly with cigars, lovely to sip neat over ice)
Ron zacapa solero 23 (pricey at about ?60 a bottle, but so worth it.....again, lovely to sip neat over ice)

If you start to get a taste for aged rum then I highly recommend El Dorado and Kirk and Sweeney. Pussers is also a good choice with a more robust taste. Rum is now my prefered tipple to enjoy a good cigar with.
