  • Ok don't shoot me but ....

Has anyone smoked a cigar the wrong way round?

Obviously the mind wonders when isolated and I was just thinking what a cigar would be like if I lit up the head and smoked through the foot. It's a tube of tobacco so it's not as though you can only get smoke to go one way. Would a transitional stick be better / worse getting flavours 'back to front'.

Is the foot more likely to unwrap during smoking than the head, I expect so .

Hmm I feel an experiment coming on.

Well, if you cut a cigar too short, beyond the cap, the wrapper unravels, doesn't it? So if you smoked it the wrong way, the same thing would happen?

I think geoffbot did this the other day? No reason it wouldn?t work not like leaves are directional (happy to be proven wrong on that!) but I think it would likely unravel yes

Yes I did this last year with a custom rolled preferido. It smoked okay until the wrapper all unraveled.

But ... If you smoke 2 cigars from the same box one backwards.. do they taste the same!?

I mean. They do bunch bits of filler that are not full length. Cigars can vary as they progress. So, like listening to heavy metal records backwards, do you get a different .. experience!?

You would hear a message from Satan for sure, but flavour wise? Should be the same.

                        Why would it unravel?
The wrapper starts at the foot with the edge being over wrapped as the leaf is rolled down to the head. Like you wrap a racket handle. Unless you mean it unwraps from where you're burning it rather than in your mouth.
I'll give it a go and report back. I was initially interested to see if it would help the tight draws I've been plagued with on the Monte 4s which I had assumed was due to stems or knots at the head end. My idea was to burn through the obstruction first to leave a knot free rest of cigar. However I just got one out to smoke backwards and it had a great draw. So compared to the tight bugger from last night. The problem wasn't a knot or stems it was the diameter, circumference / ring gauge which was massively different. The diameter of the tight M4 was 14mm and the normal was 16mm. So the ring gauge on the tight one is a lot smaller and with the same amount of leaves in both no wonder one was a problem. So much for quality control. 20200420_143254.jpg

                          It definitely does unravel.
When I was in Gimenos a few years ago, I was gifted a Bolivar Britannicas because the head was kind of knackered so I smoked it in reverse.....
                          Ended up in pieces

You're right the wrapper unravels from the smoking end and not your mouth. Makes sense now as one end is held together by the leaf being wrapped over it and the other by the cap.
As for taste the Monte no 4 was the same though as it is non-transitional for me anyway that was to be expected. Big thing will be a stick that has defined flavour changes to see if that provides the same flavours but in reverse or whether preceeding flavours affect subsequent ones.
You can tell I'm bored today can't you.

                              Updated.
Wrapper came off to such an extent that I removed it entirely. It was like meeting an older lady in a beautiful dress but when the dress comes off the next layer is all wrinkly.
Smoked it sans wrapper and what a difference. It was much smoother and sweeter with no burning on the retrohale. Actually preferred it to with a wrapper.
Maybe I should learn something about how sweet an older lady could be once you get rid of the wrapping.
                              Interesting experiment non the less.
