• Blue smoke

Afternoon gents (I don?t think we have any ladies do we?).

Has anyone noticed that the smoke from the lit end has a blue hue to it whereas the smoke from your mouth is distinctly white/great?

It?s much more apparent in bright sunlight.

Any ideas as to why this is the case?

So puropunch found Greg's reference to blue smoke in my COTM18 thread, where Greg says, 'no hints of blue in the smoke but silky'. However, I'm still not clear, Greg (or others), whether blue smoke is a good thing or a bad thing. (I appreciate this degree of concern also puts me in the nerd category, but I too blame lock down...)

I'd be more worried about yellow or green smoke

I have absolutely no credentials in this space. However, I suspect the blue smoke comes from specific oils within the tobacco leaves. Perhaps certain leaves/cigars produce more of this blue smoke?

In your photo it looks like the smoke stems from the outer wrapper leaf.... [emoji848]

Oh no... I'm one of them now [emoji33][emoji23]

I'm sure I asked about this a year or so ago.
The only difference between the smoke off the end of a cigar and from your mouth will be moisture. I'm guessing this will change the wavelength of the sunlight reflecting off the smoke hence the colour change.
Different chemicals have different reflective wavelengths of light so cigar smoke colour will depend on what's in the leaves.
Maybe.

I think it's normally blue grey but comes out of the head brown cos it's picked up loads of tar and nicotine

I don't know if the two are related but in meat smokers that burn wood, the cook will always wait for the smoke to change from white to blue. I understand that this indicates that the temperature of the wood coals are optimal and won't impart bitter flavours to the food. If you put the meat in too early it will pick up soot and will taste worse for it.

Also why you should wait for your charcoals to turn white before cooking.

I think I may finally have this CAD under control...
