    Ok,
so I got a royalty check, which I thought would be for about ten cents, but it turned out to be worth a little bit of money, and I've been thinking it's time for another box to add to my small, slowly growing collection. I've gotten excellent advice thus far, so I thought I'd list out the boxes I have and see what you folks think is the next logical choice. Here goes:

    Partagas D4 (25 box)
    Partagas Shorts (50 cab)
    RASS (25 dress box)
    Bolivar RC (10 dress box)
    Montecristo especial 2 (25 box)
Hoyo de Monterey epi. 2 (25 cab)

I've had the JL2 on my radar, but I'm not sold on that yet. Whady'all think?

I'd probably go for the Boli RC, for my money, a great cigar.

I can see the smaller box size weighing against it though... there's something so much more satisfying about opening up a cab of 25.

      hey soulmanure,
i see the majority of your choices are robustos.........and very good ones at that!!!! lol!!! not sure what you mean by the next logical step.......do you mean bigger cigars? better robustos? okay, i'll take a shot of what ticks my boxes (our selections are very similar)!!!

      robustos...........
*vegas robaina famosos (almost as good as the bolivar RC imo),
*h upmann connie no. 1 (great for aging, i'm slowly falling in love with the upmann brand),
*RYJ short churchills (fantastic, consistant, quality everyday smokes)!!!

btw, you mentioned the JL2!!! personally i hated the 2 i smoked, though most on here sing their praises!!!

also, check out yiorgos's list from xmas for a fantastic robusto review!!!!

now, recently, i've started smoking bigger cigars:
      partagas p2's
      h upmann magnum 50's
      HDM epicure especials

btw, all these are very reasonably priced for boxes!!

let me know what you think, and if i've understood you right!!!!

      all the best mate,

      alex

I agree--I almost got the cab, but I read that the tubos had a better flavor, so I thought I'd dip into the pool with the ten spot first. A great long smoker, that RC.

              Great questions

              1. The list is of the boxes I already have
              2. I suppose that size, er, doesn't matter, but rather having yet another box of fantastic sticks to grab from.

But you put down some great ideas, and it's true that I do have mostly robustos. Seems like an ideal size for great flavor and a good amount of smoking time. I've my eye on the P2's, but I worry that it's a bit too close to the D4. Been thinking about the Upmann mags, though. What didn't you like about the JL2?

Lastly, I now remember, senor robusto, that I got the advice about the tubos from you. They are smoking most excellently. Thanks!

how about a different brand maybe the VR Unicos or Famosos, or Dippy #2.
I started out with nothing and i've still got most of it left - Seasick Steve

                  hey soulmanure,
i couldn't pinpoint for sure about what i didn't like about the JL2, but i can tell you, i chucked it at about the halfway point!!! i was assured that it must've been a duff one, so i bought another single.........same thing, didn't like the taste and chucked it after smoking half!!!! but everyone else on here loves 'em, so something has to be said for that!!!!!

as for the P2.........i bought a 3 pack to try one, since the PSD4 is my fav robusto!!!! smoked 1 and bought a box of 10 right after (it's all i could've afforded at that moment of madness, lol)!!!! yes, they're THAT good!!!! they're the next step up from the humble D4 imo!!!!!

so, the boxes listed..........are they boxes you already own?

A ha! It would appear that it was I who misread the original post... (Damn those skim reading classes ).

I'd personally looking at going with one of skyhigh's recommendations. The Diplomaticos No2 was an absolute revelation for me a month or so ago - it was truly magnificent. At about an hour and twenty minutes it's a nice, short, step up from the robustos too. Meanwhile, the VR Famosos is one of my all time favourites (so can imagine that the Unicos is a great smoke too).

                    How about an Upmann - a No2 or a Mag50 perhaps?

oh, and thanks for taking my advice on the boli rc tubos!!! i swear by 'em!!!!

i see skyhigh has agreed on the vegas robaina brand for you........and since you like robustos, the famosos is a great recommendation!!!!

Great reviews simonjgriffithshr, and it looks like the VR Famoso is now a strong contender--but perhaps I should branch out from the robustos since I have a few already? Tough decisions here...

I would add the SLR Serie A which is a very underrated cigar and always reliable.

Good list of recommendations so far...(Upmanns,VR,SLR etc.) could also ad a Punch, perhaps in the Corona Gorda size, a Punch Punch or an RS11, an ERDM would be nice too, if you fancy something smaller to fit in time wise below the party short go for the Demi-Tasse otherwise the PC and the Choix Supreme are both good, a Trinadad robusto T (the Reyes is nice too!) would be a good choice as well.

Maybe you should go for a couple of singles of each first! I've heard good things about the Dipi range, especially the No. 2, but have not had munch experience of this brand personally.

You need to ad an R&J also, a Duke is the obvious choice, but the Short Churchill/Churchill, Belicosos, Cazadores or one from the Exhibicion range would also be good, there is also the Cohiba range, most are good if a little over priced, better to try all the others first.... you could try a couple of Robustos in a sampler maybe.. so once you have tried most of the above there is plenty to try after, but better to have tried most of the popular things first.......
