  • Are we the GOOD guys or not?

A rather brilliant and thought provoking piece written by Soulmanure (copyright pending) got me thinking. . .

Are cigar smokers portrayed as 'Good guys' in popular culture, or are we increasingly seeing ourselves depicted as the 'Bad guys' (for want of a better term).

Let me give you an example, in the 80's there were programmes like: 'The A-Team' where the ' hero' (George Peppard) was rarely seen without a cigar clenched between his teeth, however, in more recent times, producers and directors appear to use cigars as little more than a prop. A short-hand way of suggesting that a character is either ' evil or just generally subversive.

    My question/challenge is this:

Can my fellow BOTL provide examples of characters seen smoking cigars in popular culture (old and new) and suggest whether or not they consider them to be: 'Good', 'Bad' or 'Subversive'?

    I'll start.

Hannibal Smith (George Peppard) in: The A Team' = Good guy
    Who's next?

        Like-wise.

        How about:

The Comedian (Edward Blake) in 'The Watchmen' = Bad?

Are the 'Bad Guys' gonna win?

great idea for a thread!!!! here's a couple of examples from television and movies of how the symbolism of cigars is used to help define character's personalities.......

'shifty', subversive, but lovable 'geezers' (good guys)
del boy & boycey (only fools & horses)
                arthur daley (minder)

                bad guys
the mafia boss from bruce lee's 'way of the dragon'
the mafia boss from bruce lee's 'fists of fury'
the mafia boss from jackie chan's 'mr nice guy'
al pacino in scarface (though technically he's an anti-hero)
                james bond villains
larry hagman as jr ewing from dallas

                good guys
clint eastwood (as the man with no name from sergio leone's spaghetti westerns)
arnold schwarzenegger (in commando, predator..... hell any of his 80's movies)
Ernest Borgnine in the dirty dozen
                james bond
                telly savalas in kojak
                columbo
                john wayne
benicio del toro in 'che' (duh)!!!

this is all i can think of now........

General Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross in Louis Leterrier's The Incredible Hulk. Good? Started off bad, but yes, a good guy in the end!

Dr. Paul Shannon (aka Morgan Freeman) in Chain Reaction... I'd say good guy, though the first 3/4 of the film was him being portrayed as the bad guy.

Sgt Denver 'Bull' Randleman (portrayed by Michael Culditz) in Band of Brothers - Fair to assume Good Guy.

Interesting side note. Though in a few Bond films we see 007 smoking a stogie, Ian Flemming orginally only ever wrote Bond smoking cigarettes, as smoking cigars showed 'evil intent'.
