  • Really Stupid Idea

Thought I'd share this with you guys...

In 2012 I intent to replicate the achievement set out in the book Facing the Frozen Ocean by Bear Grylls. Bear, as part of a team of four, undertook the first ever unassisted crossing of the North Atlantic in an open top RIB.

This will be done in aid of the Royal British Legion and the RNLI (provided neither have any concerns about what is being attempted).

There's a build-up of almost two years for training, pulling the team together, getting the funding etc.

As such, I wonder if I could impose upon your goodselves a couple of favours:

    1. If any of you are on Facebook, could you please join/like this page please.

    2. If any of you work for any companies which may be interested in sponsoring this attempt (unfortunately it won't be especially cheap...), please let me know. There should be some excellent publicity opportunities. We're hoping for some good press coverage, as well as a few events ahead of the challenge.

    3. Not possible just yet, but once the two charities have cleared the event, a Just Giving page will be set up. When this is, anything you can spare would be greatly appreciated.

Also, if there is anyone interested in taking part or assisting in any other way, then that would be wonderful. (Good excuse for a cigar at the finish line...)

None of these amazing things ever happen without someone saying 'lets do it', all power to you Simon

          Good luck Simon.
Setting up shop, heart a-flutter and now this.
          A man of ambition.

This may have something to do with a seeming failure of the second...

Still, always wanted to do something like this. Once considered attempting the first ever solo-circumnavigation via the Poles. Then I realised that really wasa stupid idea... This one would be a challenege, but eminently more doable.

Good luck, Simon. You'll need it.

When I was at sea, in the late 70s/early 80s, I lived with this lovely woman (far too good for a hairy arsed seaman like me) in a wee village near Edinburgh. Now the wife of the owner of my local was the sister of Chay Blyth and she had an almost impenetrable Borders accent. Well, impenetrable to me, being a teuchter!

Anyway, one day I asked her if Chay was looking for any crew as the round the world race was coming up.

"Do you think Chay's looking for any crew?"

                      "Chay's ayways lookin fer crew!"

                      "How much does he pay?"

"Piy? Piy? Chay disnae piy you, you piy him! Aboot ten thoosan tae dae the race!"

Suffice to say, nothing more was said about it!
No man has the right to fix the boundary of a nation.
No man has the right to say to his country, "Thus far shalt thou go and no further."
