  • Short Winter Smoke ? 24

    Cigar: Partagas Shorts
    Size: 110 ins x 42 ? Minutos
    Origin: Cuba
    Smoke time: 40 mins

Cigar box age: Unknown. Bought as a 5 selection midway 2009.

Appearance: Squat looking, slightly box pressed with a semi-rustic natural wrapper carrying a few raised veins. Partagas Standard band ?A?.

Construction: Solidly packed and had a nice reassuring ?pinch? at the band. Resistive pre-draw. (The pre-draw attached flavour to my lips before I?d even thought about reaching for my jet-flame). Excellent smoking draw. The burn was generally straight with just a minute or two of waywardness in the second third. The ash was firm and compact and typical Cuban mid-grey. Two tap offs, no re-lights, no corrections.

Flavour: Delicious. The pre-light aroma was woody tobacco. The start was intense, with a fresh, scintillating take on customary Cuban citric ?twang? tasting like sharp, grapefruit sorbet over smooth caramel. After about an inch these flavours ?dried? down to become more mellowed in tone, but more the better for that. The smoke, which came in easy, creamy volumes had an aromatic wood/spice quality about it. Two thirds in and the initial flavours took on a soft, sodalike lightness before reseeding, during which time note of wood and light spice join the flavours mix. The transition was amazing and packed bags of interesting and delicious flavour. Slightly before the final third it was apparent that the power pedal had been pushed and the smoke was now moving from medium to full power. In the last third, and with the last vestage of Cuban citric sweetness still constant, the flavour tones became deeper and more rounded but still perfectly balanced by the bitter-sweet under notes and the addition of more peppery spice flavours. As you might have guessed, I really loved this cigar.

Overall: Thoroughly deserving of it?s reputation as a Cuban Classic. Medium to strong delivery of nicely balanced flavours coupled with a gradual increase in tobacco strength. Maybe NOT for an absolute beginner as the tobacco strength is a little deceptive and becomes very strong in the final phase. Newbees beware!

Reviewers Rant: I really enjoyed this afternoon?s smoke and became quite resentful of having to make notes and stopping to take pictures.
