  • Recent EL top 5?

Really looking forward to the EL 2011 releases, however having been lucky enough to try most of the recent EL releases I now consider my favourites top 5 to be:

    1. Montecristo Sublime 2008.
    2. Upmann Mag 50 2005.
    3. R&J Escudos 2007.
    4. Bolivar Petite Belicosos 2009.
    5. Upmann Mag 48 2009.

    Anyone think any differently?

Hi Whisk. I'll not go further back than 2005 as per your example

    My choices are:
    1. Monte Sublimes
    2. Partagas D5
    3. H. Upmann 48
    4. RyJ Dukes
    5. RyJ Petit piramides

Obviously if 2004 was allowed, the Coeebah Sublimes would be #1

I'll second Daize- I've not had many ELs that I'd consider particularly good.

Quite liked the 2000 Partagas Piramide, ditto 2005 Monte D and 2007 Hoyo.

However, the 08 Sublimes were absolutely brilliant. In terms of smoking young they're in a completely different league from every othe EL I've had.

Based on those I've had so far, I'd be tempted to include this years Montecristo Gran Edmundo EL.

It's early days I know, but (thanks to a terribly sweet tooth) I love 'em!

            Goes without saying mate.

Surprised at you choosing the Dukes Stevieboy. I did not rate them at all. Maybe I need to revisit them.

I don't think I've tried enough for a top 5 but the two that stand out in my mind are the HdM Regalos 2007 and the Mag 48 2009.

I've heard so many great things about the Sublime though, I'm going to have to try and get my hands on one.

None of the recent ELs can't hold a candle to those from 2000 to 2005?

                  Hoyo Piramides, Partagas D2 & D3, Monte Robusto, R&J Hermoso #2, etc?

I will be naughty and consider all LE's as the years blend together in my mind, old age setting in maybe.

Most enjoyed, in no particular order:

                      Partag?s - Pir?mides
                      Montecristo - Double Corona
                      Partag?s - Serie D No.1
                      Montecristo - Sublimes
                      Romeo y Julieta - Dukes

                      Most annoyed I missed:

                      Hoyo de Monterrey - Piramide

                      Biggest Disappointments:

                      Cohiba Sublime
Montecristo Robustos (both releaseses but I have to revisit as Moneky66 raves about them and out palletes overlap somewhat so maybe just bad sticks in my case).

Most hated, in fact my most hated of all Cuban cigars in the last ten years at least.

Bolivar Petit Belicosos (but I love the Belicosos Finos with a few years on, odd).

I didnt like the Duke much either. Loved the Monte Sublime when it came out but I dont feel these have aged well. The worst however was the 2006 Cohiba Piramide.

My vote goes to Cuaba Piramides and Party Especials.

Oddly I agree regarding the ageing of the Monty Sublimes. They are too "smooth" and "creamy" now. I first heard them described like this by Deano late last year as we smoked a couple. At first I thought he was mad as he likes a creamy cigar but upon revisiting the cigar a couple of times I do feel they have lost something they used to have. A cigar that size should have flavour and body. Subtle is good, but too mellow in this case, at the moment anyway, they may change again.

Cohiba Pyrmaid was balls, I agree. I did like the Duke though, did you give it a good couple of chances?

                            Dukes V Escudos.

Maybe the Dukes I smoked were a bad box; I will have to try them again.
Personally the Escudos is now a far better cigar IMO.

ps. Completely forgot about the MC Robustos from 2006. Absolutely great smoke, best MC I have smoked.

I purchased a box without trying them and ended up giving half of them away. I smoked 4 out of the box over time but they didnt do anything for me. Too much of a floral taste. I'd describe the flavour as a short churchill on steroids. I'm not so keen on the RjJ brand as I once was. It could have been a bad box but others loved the ones I gave out.
