  • 2009 Montecristo No. 2

I reached into my humidor after dinner and looked for something different, something that I hadn’t tried for a long while. Right at the bottom I found a half-empty box of Montecristo No. 2’s from 2009. I hadn’t given one of these a try for ages, but boy am I glad I did.

    Introduction
The Montecristo’s before 2009 received mixed reviews, but many thought that the high standards of flavour had slipped. But 2009 seems to be a very different experience. The best of the bunch are towards the end of 2009.

    Description

The smell was completely irresistible, with a deep, rich note of coffee and a higher note of sweet spice. The pre-light draw was good too, but the cigar was a little tighter than most – so I had to take a little more off of the cap.

The flavour of this cigar is very difficult to explain. It is very deep and complex, but it merged beautifully in a smooth format. I tried my hardest to break down the separate flavours and was left with this …

A very rich taste of coffee and dark chocolate made up the body of the flavour, followed by a very smooth sweetness. Once you get used to these flavours you can begin to detect a hint of vanilla and cinnamon to finish the blend.

The quality of these sticks is amazing. The flavour starts right from the off and doesn’t deviate throughout the smoke. Towards the end there are no harsh or bitter flavours, but a woody oak taste starts to come into the cigar. The smoothness blends the flavours perfectly and leaves us with something truly unique. A cigar best enjoyed in the evening.

    Profile
    Flavour: Medium – Strong
    Body: Medium – Full
    Value: Moderate
    Rating: 4.7/5

Thanks for the review. Monte 2's inevitably suffer from inconsistency due to the sheer volume of production but when you get a good one they are great.

Not sure what you are basing this comment on. 2008 was a fantastic year (true for nearly all Habanos production), indeed one retailer recently bought up H and F's entire remaining Monte 2's from 2008 because they believe they are that good.

I wasn't 100% on all of the years prior to 2009 as I struggled to find much on the internet. But I drew the conclusion from most of what I had read. I don't remember reading any feedback (good or bad) on the 2008 Monte so my conclusion was probably flawed.

Thanks for the info though - I'll definately keep it in mind.
        Glad you liked the review

Great review. 2010s are smoking pretty well thus far, unlike the PSDN4 which are rather light...need a year or two obviously.

Cor! nice words.... I didn't like the review....

"something that I hadn’t tried for a long while" ... what! less than 2 years!!!

"I hadn’t given one of these a try for ages" ... what! about 2 years !!!

If the bottom of your humi's only 2 yrs old, then your just a baby!

"But I drew the conclusion from most of what I had read. "

If the internet says it's good - then it must be!

Good effort JP but no cigar....

P.S. I'm not PC, or a sychophant to anyone, in person or on a keyboard...love the fact your written a review..fair play - but with all due respect ( & honesty) IMHO, I thought it was distinctly naive............

              Sorry, Puff

None at all, I admire anyone who can write any sort of review...I can't find the words that nobody before me has ever used...
but: bugger my luck!.. I say it as I see...(probably why I can only count good friends on one hand.) cheers,

Thanks for sharing jaypays. I think it may be about time that I finally broke my Monte 2 duck... My smoking experience is very light on the Monte front - that may be because my first two experiences were quite poor (a No4 and a No5). The only other two I've had are the Sublimes '08 LE (awesome, if I recall correctly) and the PE (got a good example of that too). Time to explore further I guess...
