Dunhill Flake, folded and stuffed, paired with Kraken run and coke. Fabulous pairing.

      St Bruno Ready Rubbed.
Finally got round to the third and last of the 'overthecounter' baccies. First the the Milkyway flavoured, tongue biting Mellow Virginia, second the soapy Condor Flake, and now St Bruno.
It's a robust tobacco with a fuller and stronger taste than I'm used to, burns well once getting it alight, and burns long and cool with zero bite.
I was a bit hasty in trying it so didn't really spend too much time analysing the flavours or aromas - just wanted to give it a blast and make a judgement on first impressions.
Impressions - the best of the three OTC baccies; not sure it would be a regular buy given more luxurious tobaccos are available for a quid or two more; will try it in different pipes to find most suitable (probably a wide bowl).

I find it somewhat similar to Condor, on a good day condor just edges it for me. I am partial to them both though, I admit that there are better smokes available for not much more money.... They have their place in my rotation though.

Enjoying a pipeful of Best Brown Flake.
Incidentally, I know you can sample cigars at J J FOX's but can you also sample pipe tobacco there?

              Dunhill London Mixture.
I've never smoked Latakia or Turkish/Oriental tobacco before, and this blend contains both. The Oriental content is wonderful, providing a rich, sumptuous smoke, balancing the dark taste of the Latakia. The Latakia does indeed smell like an open fire because my wife came home thinking I had lit the fire. DLM burns very easily and as such requires gentle sips to appreciate the complex flavours this tobacco gives, lest it burns and tastes like an ashtray. The moisture level is perfect, requiring no drying out time prior to packing, and I've experienced no gurgle whatsoever. I'm smoking this in a broad bowled Vauen Sir pipe, which I think allows the tobacco to burn cooler, and pairing it with a second pint of tea. The whole experience is relaxed and easy going with no need to fight so as to keep the pipe lit. Fabulous stuff.

                  Dunhill Early Morning
Can't make up my mind about this one yet because there isn't anything about it that jumps out as special.
Though containing the same tobaccos as London Mixture (at least the strain of leafs) the blending I don't think the blending results in such a sumptuous smoke. Perhaps the blending really is aimed towards the first smoke of the day, and as such holds back on certain characteristics so as not to encourage slipping into a smoking jacket and slippers for a session of contemplation and reflection. As for all Dunhill tobaccos, this is a very good product but, for me, lacks a uniqueness that would otherwise have me adding this to my rotation.

                    Rattray's 7 Reserve
This is a very nice, well balanced tobacco right to the bottom of the bowl. It does threaten tongue bite if smoked in a robust fashion, but then again, such an attack on the tobacco would cause it to burn hot and render the tobacco flavourless.
The nicotine hit was prominent, just tipping into the unpleasantries of head spin and fatigue.

                    • Dunhill Nightcap, still up there for me is this one. Helped me finish off a long day with a bit of relaxation and enjoyment.

                      • Kendal North Star, bought this one on a bit of a punt at a none regular tobacconist. They sold it to me on the premise that it's an "almost" pure virginia with a hint of burley.

I later found out through my own research that this is more of a "shag cut" than true pipe tobacco..... What the hell, I have it now.

Packet aroma is strangely like tea... it took a bit to light, but when going it burns true and !HOT! so careful or this one will bite. The flavour is quite mild and pure clean tobacco all the way, strength is medium.

In all honesty this is better than I was expecting considering the research I did after purchase, which suggests that some are using this fore hand rolling.

I can't say that I would go out and buy this on its own merits as a pipe tobacco.....but I am interested to experiment with it to blend and see if it will heat up a cooler burning blend.

                        • Got this as a Xmas present from a good friend. Have had a few attempts but can't seem to generate much smoke or keep the bugger lit..

Tobacco smells awesome, did a few pinches and pushed down..

                          Assume I'm doing something wrong?!

                          Any ideas?

first thing before packing is to check the moisture level of the tobacco, if it is too moist, you might want to let it sit for 10-30mins. Then you should check the draw, if it is already very tight before lighting, it will become even more firm when you light it. So my suggestion would be take the tobacco out and repack again, and of course get rid of the ashes.

                            • Best to avoid aromatic tobacco if you are new to the pipe. It burns hot and most of it tastes horrendous. A light english like Dunhill Early Morning pipe or SG squadron leader will be a much nicer smoke. Let the tobacco dry for half an hour or so and don't pack too tight. Give the baccy a good charring light of at least 6 puffs then let it go out tamp lightly and relight properly. Don't puff too hard or too often or it will get too hot. Just puff enough to keep it going. A few relights are to be expected. When you've got it down pat try some Dunhill Navy rolls - Heavenly stuff.

                              • I have come to the conclusion that charring and tamping are THE most important aspect.... So long as the draw is acceptable.
