So I popped into Lakeland today to pick up a Lock And Lock box as the first step in putting a Tup together.As I was talking to the lady and asking about other sizes and the guarantees etc she asked,"What will you be using it for"?.I replied,"It's going to be used as a humidified storage box for cigars".Judging by her physiogomy I think that what she heard was "I'm going to be excavating and storing the fecal matter of all the cats in the area" or something similar! I'm guessing there'd be no point in requesting the pleasure of herfing with her!

I know. When I mention cigars to anyone ( namely the woman at my local pets at home store) I get looked at as though I have an extra eye where my nose should be or something. People think its so odd!

Yeah I think that may well be the best way! In all seriousness though,is that what you use?.I ask because the L&L I've got will only be big enough for boxes of PC's and smaller which is fine but I'll be buying robusto and bigger for the most part.I think,to be honest,that I've got completely hung up on the idea of any kind of tup being absolutely airtight and the 9 litre Lakeland is the biggest one I've found,need to lighten up on the airtight issue I think and maybe get to B&Q as Joao suggested yesterday.

Nope, the only thing I keep in plastic boxes from Tesco is my packed lunch for work! I'm a humi man myself. I have three Hillwood humidors. I find them fine, I use a digital hygro in all three and Puck 65s. Keeps all my sticks fine. I'm a fan of the bigger violas myself - DCs, Churchills and double robustos/robustos mainly.

A 5.5L L&L will keep 2 boxes of robusto cigars. The way I see it is, I buy a box of say robusto cigars that are worth ?250+. I buy a L&L box to put them in which costs me ?10 and I buy some beads to regulate humidity which cost me about ?15.
The cigars are in their own box seperate from others so there is no cross contamination of flavours (some believe it happens others don't). The real reason for me is that my stash is safe from the dreaded baccy beetle. If there were an outbreak I lose the infected box. If I want to put a box away to age I can sit it down at the bottom of the chest I put my tupperdors in and have no need to open it again until it's time to smoke them. When I open a tupperdor to take a cigar for a smoke I'm only upsetting the environment in that box for an hour or so. The beads quickly stabilize it within 20 minutes and the other boxes are un disturbed.
In my opinion having many small lock and lock boxes is a massive advantage over one big box. Sure it costs a bit more and sure it takes up more space but the pros for sure outweigh the cons don't you think?
Some people are cheap and like to cut corners saving a pound here and a pound there but let's face it. it's a false economy saving say ?20 on storing a box of 25 short churchills if it increases the vulnerability to baccy beetle. I hear people say stuff like "The chances are almost nil" ect ... until they get bitch slapped by an outbreak!
Some cut corners and take chances with their cigars, that's fine if all you have are a box of reject Guantanemeras! My collection has grown and is worth in the region of ?1000 - ?2000, maybe more, and growing. I like to smoke good quality cigars kept in optimum conditions with as little risk as possible. Maybe I'm being a bit of a nit picker but if I woke up to find out my cigars were dust or had all gone mouldy or been eaten by beetle because I was too tight to buy a decent plastic box to store them in, a decent hygrometer or decent humidification I'd regret it for the rest of my life.

No I don't think you're being a nit picker by any stretch.It sounds like you're just taking very good,diligent care of your investment/enjoyment.I can certainly visualise the system you're using and to be honest it would probably work very well for me within the set up of my home.When I wrote that the 9 litre box would only be big enough for PC's and smaller I was talking in terms of the cigars remaining inside their dress boxes/cabs but again,that might just be an aesthetic consideration that it would help to get over,as it were Could I ask you what you use to keep the beads in please?.And I'm guessing that you house a hygro in each individual L&L?.Cheers,

A 5.5L will carry 2 robusto dress boxes.

I just recieved some Choix supreme this week and put them inside a 5.5L L&L. Heres some pics I just took of it,

I've got some puck beads inside with a caliber III hygrometer all purchased from Cgars LTD. The Humidity is 66% - 68% for all of my tupperware boxes. Strictly a hygrometer isn't neccessary once I've set the box up and had it stable for 3 days. For long term I then just take the hygrometer out and close the lid.
I don't need to open it to check on the humidity either, I've got a box of RyJ churchills that have been maturing for the last year. The humidity is still dead on after one year without adding any water.
Long term boxes I don't bother with a hygro, though I might check them out once a month. The hygro is generally for making sure the humidity has been stable for 3 days then I can take it out if needed elsewhere. About half of my humis have hygros at any one time since beads + lock and lock are just so reliable.

Blimey!! It was a PSD4 box that I tried to get into the 9 litre and it won't fit! guess it's a different size box altogether.Anyway thank you very much for you advice and the photos my friend,you've been very helpful

Edit - Yeah slightly smaller dimensions on the 9 litre.A couple of lessons for me on the importance of adequate research I think

Try asking them what aquarium air pump they would recommend for a half metre high cold smoker....
