  • Limited and Regional Edition cigars....

Having smoked quite a few of these recently, i have found many quite disappointing...even some of the casa del habano releases except for the Bolivar gold Medal, which is untouchable right now..
Maybe my expectations are too high for the limited run cigars, and more often than not, they fail to produce that satisfaction and value for money.
    What do you guys think??

The 2004 Cohiba sublime and the 2006 Monty Robusto are two excellent ELs.

Great ELs I've tried - Monte C '03, Monte Sublimes '08, Monte GE '10, cohiba 1966 '11, RA Extra '11, HU Mag 48 '09 is pretty good, HdM Regalos '07 (got a box of 07 Trini Ingenios recently I still need to try), RyJ Duke '09 - not a bad one among them and that's a fair few gooduns over the years.

Great REs I've Tried - RA Lusitanos Portugal (started great, may have failed to age well), Boli Petit Libertador France, PL Encantos Asia, PL Valiosos Swiss, Bolivar Britanicas, and I'm sure some others, haven't tried as many REs though...

And sure there have been some rubbish ones too, punch swiss re for example, but then I'm not a punch fan, and the Trini short robusto 2010 while not bad was a huge ripoff (not to mention the Punch Medalla de oro!!!) but I do think ELs and REs add some variation and even fun to my cigar buying...

Out of my limited experience, I have tried:

                EL - H Upmann Mag 48 EL '09, Partagas SD EL '10

RE - Bolivar Britanicas (UK), Punch Small Club (France)

So far, all have been fantastic! If I were you, keep hunting, bound to be a EL or RE out there for you!

Are we reading the same thread, muchacho?

Another brilliant EL is the 2005 H. Upmann Mag. 50. Almost too good to smoke!

I've only tried the ELs from the past 4 or so years and only and handful of the REs but the 2008 Monty Sublimes and the 2007 Asia Pacific PL Robustos both stick in my mind as being amazing cigars. I need to get my hands on some 2009 RyJ Dukes but I think they are getting harder to find.

I love the Mag. 46 and the Mag. 48 EL, but the Mag. 50 really does nothing for me. I found it to be bland and boring. But I know that a lot of people like it so I expect that it's just personal taste.

To be honest, I don't really chase ELs and REs. Most of the time they're not worth the extra that you pay for them (there are of course some notable exceptions) and there are plenty of excellent regular production cigars to choose from.

Different strokes, I reckon. But I have to ask - are you talking about an EL or a regular production Mag. 50?

Eitherway, tru dat regarding the value of the REs and ELs. I think we all understand that this is mostly a marketing ploy. But having said that, there are plenty of good and not so good EL's and REs, as there are in the regular production puros. So I guess it comes down to the extra value we each place on a good puro vs. a great puro.

Oops sorry I was talking about the regular production Mag. 50, I haven't tried the EL. Are they very different in flavour?

I think you're right that ELs and REs are mostly marketing ploys by HSA. I'm generally happy to pay extra for a great cigar, but I'm just not convinced that most ELs are better than regular production (again, there are definitely exceptions). There are very few ELs that I think can compete with a well aged Fundadores, Sir Winston or Lusitania.

Okay, that makes sense. TBH, I don't recall having smoked the stock-line mag 50, but I've heard from many sources who claim there is a world of difference between the two. Perhaps our pal senor stevietheboy can pull himself away from those other forums long enough to expand on this. I believe he has smoked both. Or perhaps it was our friend senor booze (aka, Whiskey).

Eitherway, IMO, the 2005 EL Mag 50 is smoking very well after seven long years of rest.

But as I like to say.....What The Hell Do I Know!

Hey el P! I think it WAS senor Whiskey who weighed in this puro some time ago.

There are good and bad. Personally I do not enjoy most of the EL's as i find the maduro wrapper far too dominating. As for the regional's there are a few gems each year ...and lots of smokes not as good as regular production. Keep your ear to the ground and some of the gems will become apparent.

Always remember, Regional's and EL's are a marketing exercise, not a service for afficianados.
