First cigar purchase

Can anyone hazard a guess at what sort of condition they are in? I didn't want to turn round to the guy after he gave me such a great gift and question his abilities as a cigar smoker ect. I just said a massive thank you

Hello, I have no idea, I didn't want to ask after he gave them me as I thought it would seem ungrateful. I think i'll take them to a cigar shop near me and get them checked out.

No need, just crack one open & try it. I have had a couple of cigars R&J Churchills somewhat worse for wear from tubes. I assumed perhaps they had been opened before in a drier place like the shop & they had lost that perfect humidity inside the tube. But this doesn't last forever. All the guy in the shop will do is open one anyway - no other way to tell what there like. Fingers crossed you should find their be very smokable. If the cigars are the originals from the box (no one of knowing that as the tubes aren't dated) so we'll assume they are, they must be from between '94 & '08. Cigars far older are sold at auction withe box still sealed & turn out fine. Open one up, you have me going now!

Ill do that, when I opened the tubes when i first received them, there seemed to be a fine dust like substance.... I'm assuming sugars from fermentation like pipe tobacco? I immediately checked for fungal spores and found nothing. Haha oops ive got you going.

That is a great list of cigars for yourfirst purchase, but it appears the list pales beside the gift. Sinceyou are a new cigar smoker, you may want to sample a couple of yourseven cigars first and then give one of the Romeo and Julieta Cigarsa smoke, so you have a good basis for comparison.


I am intrigued to see your report onthat box of ten cigars. That is a very nice gift. I assume you planto put them in a humidor for a while before smoking them, since theymay be extremely dry depending on how he was storing them.


I would enjoy hearing your impressionon the Leon Jimenes Rum Fused, also. I have not bought one of those.

I have put them in the humidor to reach correct hydration levels ect. I tried the rum one the other day, I found it ok for my first none supermarket cigar but not what I expected. You can't taste the rum in the smoke but boy can you taste it if you lick your lips haha. Towards the end the cigar got very bitter and ashy it took me in total around 40mins to smoke it. Not a bad cigar for ?2.99 but not something i think ill rush out to buy again. That's just my own subjective review. Others may find it different of course

I have a had a flavoured smoke a while back and hated it mate just tasted like metal and as you said the bitter taste was strong myself now stays well clear on them

Ill be staying clear myself. I'm at a loss for what to buy on my next purchase. As a student i cant/ dont want to pay a lot for a single stick.

Regius are good affordable smokes short rubusto last for 45 mins and will only set you back ?5 each

Chris, My daughter has been a uni student for 3yrs 7 is into her 4th, her addiction is shoes. The advice I give her would work for you (& probably be as welcome), either buy (& smoke) less so you can afford better quality or earn more so oyu can afford to indulge more often.


I can appreciate even with a job, buying cigars inthe UK is very expensive & there just aren't any real cheap good sticks, at least none that I have found. Dominican bundles of 25 in clear cellophane, JLP line of Country Havanas aren't for everyone but you could try them. Monte puros, haven't tried these myself but they look better than the minis. Keep studying & look forward to the graduate salary, when you'll be afford to move up the quality scale a bit more.

that is sound advice but already come to that conclusion myself as I don't see the point in paying for inferior products. I will be buying whenever I get my student loans and smoking rarely, which will be relatively easy as i smoke a pipe. However i do have beginners obsession and want to smoke only my cigars to taste different ones but so far ive kept control i think those bundles still cost a lot. It's easier for me to buy a few quality sticks at a time and stock up rather than spending a lot at once.
