  • Plain packaging? No, prime minister!

    Hi Everyone,

Please have a read of this:

Important message to opponents of plain packaging from Forest director Simon Clark:

Eights weeks ago, on April 3, public health minister Jane Ellison announced the Government was "minded" to introduce plain packaging of tobacco.
Her statement followed the publication of the Chantler Review, a report whose many flaws I highlighted on my blog. Government would publish regulations and there would be a "final short consultation", added Ellison.

Anticipating this outcome Forest built a new micro site that allows opponents of plain packaging to send a letter to David Cameron, the architect of the mess the Government has got itself into.

We intended to launch it to coincide with the start of the "final short consultation". Instead there has been a deafening (and welcome!) silence from government ? apart from a brief comment by David Cameron in response to a question from Labour MP Alex Cunningham ? which left us with a great campaign tool but no peg on which to promote it.

Well, we can't wait any longer. There is speculation that in order to demonstrate its commitment to plain packaging, appease the Lib Dems and get Labour off his back, the prime minister will include the policy in next week's Queen's Speech.

We are therefore asking you to visit the No Prime Minister website today and send the following letter to Number Ten.

    See more here: http://www.forestonline.org/

Always happy to help or advise.

How far does the plain packaging thing go? Will companies not even be allowed to show a picture of the box on their websites? Or can they display it wrapped in plain tissue paper but the box underneath remains the same?

Just trying to get ready some loopholes

I believe in Australia everything is presented in a muddy green box

Always been in two minds about this.

                    a) I'd like it done to help prevent kids picking up fags
                    b) But I would be devastated at not being able to pick up cigars in the UK with the full packaging etc - fags and cigars are very very separate things

However. I'm pretty sure the research out of Aus shows it has little impact except on the massive increase of poor quality controlled counterfeiting. Subsequently I've signed it too.

Signed, I read that smoking in Australia has actually increased since this came in. The whole policy has come about from a bunch of do-gooders who won't let reality get in the way of what they think is a good idea

Done it. I don't think the government give a toss what we think but I'm happy to add my letter on the off chance it helps. IMO they should not make these visible to under 18's but keep the branding. In other words box sleeves should be plain white but inside the packaging shouldn't be changed. Even for fags, if they keep them stashed out of sight like in the supermarket what does it matter if they're branded? Kids will see people smoking anyway.
I don't smoke in front of my kids but millions do.

We don't actually know exactly how it will be until it actually happens but as far as we know, the cigars will look something like this.

Yippee! That box goes straight in the bin then.
