A Puro.....Yes?

Good Morning Ladies and Gents.

Have a spanktastic Thursday

So, what is a 'Puro'?

From the cigar terminology sticky at the top of this forum, it reads;

• Puro
• Describes a cigar in which all the tobacco comes from the same country. Puro can also be a generic term used to describe any cigar.

Now even with my little half peanut of knowledge, I am going to challenge that.

From the copious amounts of book reading, I believe a 'Puro' to be a cigar rolled from the same field.

Would anyone care to give another thought? Tell me to get back into my bag of KP nuts?

I'm not sure that is the case - from what I understand wrappers are grown in shade under muslin-covered fields (at least in Cuba) and filler leaves in the sun, if puros all come from the same field there wouldn't be any puros

In the end A word means what society deem it to mean, the actual word Puro is simply Spanish for pure.... By that I don't think it's unreasonable to use it while discussing cigars made of 100% tobacco from a single source/country.

So no flavourings or colouring here IMO.

Hmm, apparently the term Puro has become a Masculine Noun in Spanish to mean "Cigar" so perhaps it's just interchangeable like "Stogie"

I so agree with this! Too much is placed on some words being taboo when they are just words its meaning that matters. If you don't mean it to be bad then it isn't.

Tell that to the other manufacturers then. I smoked a Dominican 'puro' last week and the American Puro was one of the most popular NCs last year. In fact the term is more relevant to NCs where they regularly blend tobaccos from different countries.

What is a 'puro'?
A puro is a cigar that was made entirely from the tobaccos of one county. An example of the most well known Puros are Cuban cigars. In Cuba, the filler, binder, and wrapper is all grown in Cuba. Cigar manufacturers who make Puros consider it a great honor to be able to achieve a such a level of sufficiency, as it gives them more control over the consistency and quality of the finished product. The difficulty in acquiring the necessary native ingredients in producing a puro make them very rare indeed. Other than Cuban cigars, which are unavailable in the American market, there are only a handful of Puros out there. The Breton Corojo Vintage, Corojo2000, and the Opus X are all excellent quality Dominican Puros.

Although puro can apply to a cigar from any country, they are most linked to CCs (not unreasonably as most puros are CCs and all CCs are puros), this is problably why CC and puro often seem to be seen as one and the same

It also might depend where in the world you hear the word 'puro'. I've been in Spanish tobacconists where the people working there, often the owner, have referred to all their cigars as 'puros' or 'cigarros puros'. Cuban, Davidoff, Vegfina, whatever.
The word isn't used much, if at all, in Cuba. There, a cigar is a 'tabaco'.
