The reason why it's used for food packaging is because it provides a more airtight membrane (water tight when layered with a thin membrane of nitrocellulose) to keep the aromatics, oils, greases, etc and everything locked in. Nothing to do with the creation or definition
It is not a regular oil based plastic but is one of the oldest bioplastics ever discovered.
