Make sure you lick the end so its reasonably wet, push the punch in with a twisting action and it should come out fine. wetting the end is key!

If I have a glass of water, I just dip the cigar tip in the water for a second and wait a minute for it to soak in before punching. Nary a cracked cap after that.
