Every chance that there might be a difference of opinion between the good folk at cgars too....

IF i buy into plume, and i am convinced i've seen stuff on cigars that isnt mould but i am stuffed if i know what it is (previous theories of what it might have been extend to mayo on the hands of the guy packing some singles in an overseas mailorder!!! ) ... Anyhow IMHO fluffy white lumpy patches are everything that plume isnt. I just cant define what it IS.

@cj121 that is the best read on this i have seen. What it describes is exactly what i have witnessed to be plume and not mould. BUT I accept that plume has yet to be 'scienced' ... Where as bacterial growth is pretty empiric.... The tips on mould prevention and management are worth taking note of for anyone with a worry too. Great share

Right, heres the plan. We contact a University with a Botany or Plant Sciences department, between us we gather samples of cigars that may have plume and we see if the good learned folk are interesten in analysing our samples..... Lets put this to bed for good.


1: Does anyone have any contacts at a University, if not I will make a contact.

2: Would anyone be willing to donate samples?

The sticks I've seen with 'plume' are best described as having a light crystalisation on the wrapper, in certain light conditions they reflected light giving different colours, muted although noticeable. The mouldy sticks I've seen had white furry blotches on them, no way they could be confused IMO.

Green blotches can sometimes be water marks

Probably frog-eyes caused by excess moisture and so affecting the fermentation process. Nothing to worry about but might be worth putting a pic up if you're worried.

This is an never ending debate, basically if you have to ask, it's mould. The guy posting the single of LGC was 100% convinced his fluffy white growth was plume & to back it up, he claimed to be a cigar sommelier. I goggled him as instructed but nothing came up. If he is, one has to question there training & credentials.

I do wonder what the mould might be cultured into... smoking penicilin probably has not real benefits!!! but perhaps it brings on delusional episodes...

count my appetite as sufficiently wetted! I will see if I can rustle up a suitable stick... not thinking my collection have the right calibre... but I will check
