Cigar Flavours

As a fairly new cigar smoker I just get burning tobacco in general when smoking, though there is a difference of that flavour between different sticks and brands and the smoke can be different in its thickness.
I have noticed I am sometimes picking up distinct flavours but as mentioned it's coffee's, spiciness/pepperyness - though while smoking a El Rey Del Mundo Choix Supreme recentlyI did get the distinct flavour of buttered toast which was quite nice - and no I wasn't eating toast at the time!

I am generally now picking up the smoothness of the cigars, some are silky smooth and some aren't in the slightest!

I'm in the second category. I have struggled until fairly recently to pick out anything other than 'like' or 'dislike' but have noticed some distinct flavours recently. I found Spearmint in a RASS during the first third and have been experiencing a lot of caramel notes. I'm not sure whether some of the latter is psychosamitic, but I am really enjoying smoking at the moment regardless. I do wonder how genuine many of the reviews that list ten or twenty distinct flavours are, but each to their own. I would feel very lucky if I could get even half the flavours that I read about!

If you are smoking fresh cigars you will be lucky to pull out one flavor other then "burning tobacco"

I think it takes years after the cigar is rolled for the tobaccos to blend together. And at that point if you have a good tasting palate, you should be able to find at least 3 flavor. The first in the start the 2nd in the midway point and the 3rd ate the end.

Most people will get chocolate, Coffee, Creem and toasted nuts.

Sounds like you smoke alot of Partagas typical flavors of that brand!!! (Pepper and leather)
Bolivar people get earth taste alot of the time.

I can now and again pick out some basic flavourings but not like those reviews are saying. but still enjoy it and like the smoothness of some cigars and definitely aged cigars which give better flavours as well. weird how sometimes I can't taste anything but still know whether I enjoy it or not

I always find it depends on the cigar in question, and if you take a pre-light draw and sniff maybe thats a psychological thing on the pre light but it honestly I find helps more and of course adds to the experience. But some cigars you won't get much beyond a lot of earthy flavors and your always going to get that standard Cigar flavor, however that being said there are some cigars that are full of flavor The Trinidad Reyes for example, is a wonderful sweet smooth nutty Cigar and its a real good one, great place to start if you have never had that elusive flavor experience.

If you really want a ton of flavor and have a sweet tooth Drew Estate Acid range I love these NC, and they are different but boy are they flavorful (infused cigars) it's been said on here many times before but Cubans tend to have many more flavor profiles although that isnt a rule, as there are NC with very complex flavors but in general or rather in my experience Cubans have a greater hit ratio.

Still detecting flavors is going to be a subjective thing and to be honest to get a pallet that is able to detect every flavor in a cigar is quite simply far out of my budget and probably means going in excess and for me a Cigar is the thing I relax with around other like minded people on those few times when I can its the height of relaxation.

I think there is a wide variety of flavour you can get in a cigar, but my palate at least is limited to 'nuts' or 'honey' or 'wood' etc. When you read review describing honey roasted peanut will a distinct flavour of Irn Bru in the back ground and White Lightning in the after taste, I can't help but think, the reviewer either try too hard or has Lexical-gustatory synesthesia

Well, I would say that I'm able to get 10 or so flavours or at least I think I do. Wood, cream, coffee, chocolate, hay, pepper, some kind of spice, caramel or something similar and earth. That's about it. And I don't get them all the time. Never tasted much else and I doubt that I ever will.

Oh yeah, roasted tobacco is the one flavour I always get.

If I didn't get anything except roasted tobacco I would definitely stop buying expensive cigars and exclusively smoke Jose L. Piedra and Guantanamera.

I'm lucky in that I get nuts - almond or pecan - sometimes in addition to your list and quite often a metallic mineral sort of flavour. Nice to get a natural sweetness from some tobaccos but if I ever get one that tastes like cigarettes; and I have, they go straight in the bin! Incidentally the coffee flavoured ones from Italy and the chocolate flavoured ones from the DR don't taste like that but they burn with those smells which makes them more acceptable in company sometimes.

Same here really - Almonds (Marzipan when extra lucky)/hazelnuts, cream, wood, pepper, and sometimes a flavour i can only describe as zesty...

Sadly, i have yet to have the coffee or chocolate flavours - though i will continue the search regardless

I get coffee and chocolate in quite a few cigars, but its usally on the bitter end and not that sweet. (No, im not smoking a Dairy Milk...) Upmann half corona is a pure coffee hit, especially when you pair it with an espresso, quite amazing really for such a small cigar.

My weirdest experience was a serious turkish delight hit when smoking a punch coronation, its was amazing, and although I normally get a little of this flavour in those sticks its never come through so strong again.

I was struggling to get some of the fore mentioned flav's, beyond: spicy (gingerbread of RG Selndi's), peppery (NC's can be terrible for this - in my limited experience), leather & earthy & discussed it with our sponsor who reassured me what he got was 'tobacco flav's' & it's hard to ague with that.
Just because you can't identify individual flav's doesn't of course mean you can't tell the difference between the brand profile flav's & whether it a pleasant flav, still rather green, maturing nicely or a faded stick. It's a nice surprise if some flav pops into your head but it's the overall taste experience that keep me going back for more.
