Also very good advice. When I first started I used to put a stopwatch on and take a puff every minute or so (as recommended on something I read) to get used to the pacing. The slower you can smoke without letting it go out the better the cigar tastes IMO.

Even if the cigar doesn't turn bitter at the end I find that once I get down to the last inch or so I can't discern anything other than "hot smoke" so I put it down. To be fair a lot of the cigars I've smoked up to this point have been what most of you would consider "young" so sometimes I'll stop smoking them as early as the band point. I've only now started to develop the patience to lay my cigars down for a while, and I've also been looking around for cigars that have a few years on them in advance.

I've come to almost enjoy the hot bitterness towards the end. I described it as a meaty taste when I first started, with what I assume is the oils giving an almost menthol sensation on the tongue. Sometimes it can be too much too early, but often now I can bear with it if I'm wanting to get another half inch out of the cigar.

I cant remember whether it was on this forum or somewhere else, but I've seen mention of the ageing process happening almost from the foot to the cap.

I've only smoked a couple of cigars with 'proper' age on them, but if i remember correctly, they were lovely right down to the nub. So there could be some truth in that.

Some cigars that are 20-40yrs are lush to the very butt; called nubbing, it's common with Cubans & some of our U.S. friends. I usually find the best is enjoyed before the band but usually slide it a little towards the cap & squeeze a little more pleasure of of them but green cigars certainly get bitter quicker - for me at least, one reason I like 'em well aged.

I totally agree here. From my limited experience I have that if you smoke it fast and hard, it will turn on you!
I?m going to study the ash, as it firm between draws to try to determine when the stick is ready for another puff.
