    hmm...watched the vid...

The only thing that would make sense is clearing out some of the smoke/attributes stuck within the cigar by blowing.

Also, by blowing through the cigar you do heat up the "cherry" at the end super hot, making the tobacco burn hotter and perhaps attributing to the taste when you do start inhaling it in again.

In the end, I still find it hard to believe that having the heat at the end and us blowing through the cigar removes that much.

Its like smoking a ham, if you suck in the smoke through a vent to smoke it, makes sense. But if you blow air out from the ham and vent to the fire, does it really remove that much from the ham? But it would make the fire hotter because the air is going throught vent directly. I know...weird analogy... but its the only one I can think of right now...

Don't know much about hams so I will leave that one to the pros

Combustion creates vapor, particulates, carbon, heat and light. The tar is part of the particulates as well as the smoke. Carbon is the ash and one of the vapors is water. Tar forms from burnt sugars and resins in the tobacco and would reside close to the heat source or "cherry" of the cigar. Since it's not being combusted it accumulates into a "pool" for want of a better term. The water vapor eventually delivers it down the barrel of the cigar to you but most of it resides toward the cherry. All you are doing is removing the source and thus cutting off the flow.

I guess think of it as a drippy tap. You turn the tap off (light the cigar) and as time passes (you smoke the cigar) water accumulates in the tap (in the barrel of the cigar closer to the foot) and once it accumulates enough you get a single drip (get the first taste of tar). Now the tap has much more water behind the brink of the tap (barrel of the cigar) then it does dripping out (in your mouth). So you open the tap (purge the cigar) to remove the water (tar).

Usually I am purging in the 2nd half, sometimes into the 3rd, 3rd of a cigar so I only need to do it once and all I need to do is remove enough out of the front of the cigar to alleviate the build up so the water vapor has nothing to carry.

When the tar is bonded to the filler tobacco in the barrel of the cigar it gets fully combusted and is not bitter. It's just the unbonded tar that makes it to your mouth that is bitter. Thus, you only need to remove the unbonded material.

      Yes?

Once, Twice, Three Times I Purge!

Great video, senor Blanco. And good information.

In addition to purging while smoking, I also purge my puros when I'm forced to let 'em go and plan to relight later. But I rarely relight a puro that has been out for an hour or more.

But that's just me, BJ, BJCoro

When purging a cigar it is not necessary to allow the cigar to go out, just simply blow through it rather than sucking. By allowing the cigar to go out all that happens is the smoke cools down and the tar condenses along the full length of the cigar. When relighting no amount of blowing will shift that. If you do want to lay your cigar down part way to self extinguish, blow through it before you lay it down thus avoiding this problem.
