Hello good people of the UK Cigar Forum. I have a problem figuring out how much it is going to cost me to import ?20 worth of cigars from the US. I figured a forum dedicated to cigars will have some knowledgeable chaps, that may be able to give me a hand working this out. Many thanks
That's what I assumed, but decided it was probably better to ask people who know than be presented with a large customs bill when they arrive. Thanks for the reply.
If it's a gift then you can have them if they're under ?37 (I think that's the amount). Otherwise you have to pay declare and pay duty.
Cheers Deano. Is it just the price of the goods or do they also add the postage, because with postage the total comes to ?40 but the goods come to just over ?20. Thanks
hello Wesolowski,
as far as I'm aware as long as it's a 'gift' with a value no greater than $52 you're okay! however, what you're receiving falls outside what is classed as a gift and you may be liable for a charge, though i don't think it'll be much!!! hope this helps!

all the best,

The cigars I am buying come to ?20 ($33) so should'nt it be classed as a gift? As only the postage makes it go over the threshold. Thanks for the advice
hello Wesolowski,
i'm sorry, i haven't made myself clear (for obvious reasons)! tobacco and alcohol don't fall into the category of gifts, no matter where they come from! it doesn't matter how much they are worth in $'s......you get what i mean? a packet of 5 phillies blunts are $2 in new jersey, but ?18 here!!! think about it........
btw, if you check the forum, this subject isn't discussed openly in here!!! it's a bit of a.......how shall we put it.......'a grey area'!!!! i'm not being rude, and apologize in advance since if i come across as being condescending or offensive (i'm not! i see your new here, we've all asked the same questions), but it's not rocket science!!!
i hope this helps you! btw, welcome to the ukcf! if you haven't already, go over to the newbie section and introduce yourself!!!
with tobacco you have to pay the VAT and duty on the declared value (which is the end cost price plus delivery charge).
You will also have to pay a clearing fee to the carrier too on top of VAT and duty. I think its around ?8 for royal mail and around ?20 for fed ex or ups.
VAT is a straight 17.5% and im not sure what the duty is for tobacco but its pretty high...

Tax evasion is against the rules, but he's asking if what tax he should pay - which is not really against the rules. But as you say it's a grey area.

hello all,
thank you very much stevieboy for the kind words ! just trying to help another guy out, extend the same courtesy that was extended to me when i joined!!!! we're all here to share our enthusiasm for something we all truly enjoy! we've no no need to be a A-holes, we're all BOTL after all, and gentlemen at that!
also, cheers deano for pointing that out! even though it wasn't a discussion about tacks(!) avoidance (?), i felt it was my duty to nip it in the bud before it ended up going there! just being cautious........
With the potential importing of your cigars Wesolowski, you can expect to pay Duty based upon the weight of your goods. This is currently ?173.13 per kg.
