Oops! Sorry, 'bout that, mate. Not to worry. It's only the NASA Sooper-Sekrit Stogie (especially thems from ISOM) Snooper and Combination Permanent Marker Eradicator at work. Y'see, on behalf of myselves, NASA developed this device to keep track of wot all you blokes were smoking so that if I espied something particular scrumptious, I would have the NASA Sturm Truppen abscond with your bounty and turn it into my booty.

Unfortunately, we haven't got quite all the wrinkles out of it yet, as you have experienced. Being satellite based, it requires quite a bit of power to snoop on you waaaaaaay down there on the ground, especially on that little, bitty island you call home. So sometimes the zeta radiation not only detects, but causes your stoogie to actually roast from the inside out. That's the crackling sound you hear. Also, it doesn't quite eradicate permanent marker. Well, not yet anyways. So far, alls it does is cause the chickens to lay square hard-boiled eggs. But we're still working on it...

Why take any chances. I freeze everything when it arrives. It removes any potential doubts and saves me getting that crawling-skin sensation at the thought of beetles.

NC's are frozen before they leave the factories. CC's after 08 likewise. Any beetle lavae you might hear popping are likely to be long-dead ones. But my home-freezing helps with the peace of mind.

If present, it is common for the beetle eggs to already be on the tobacco prior to rolling. Of course, manufacturers have come a long way in preventing beetle infestations. So, I wouldn't worry too much as long as you keep your humi in ideal conditions, you should be good to go.

It could also be what you mentioned about the stick being too dry and the outer leaf cracking. So, relax and have a smoke!
That and Steve burns through them too fast. The Beetles will burn or starve

Sounds about right. Usually expansion of the filler causes the binder to split first, the might be what you're hearing. Did the wrapper hold up throughout?
