Jep, you’re right Mike. But if preserved well, the prices on these will be too high for my wallet I fear

I agree. Unless the person we bought our vintage sticks in Paris from decides to sell more singles.

Hi Sham & Max, In answer to the question, how old can a cigar still hold flav: 80yrs+ from my experience. I have had a couple of 100yo cigars but there was nothing there but a little tobacco flav. But the 80yo cigar was quiet surprising. It was from 1932, we knew that because the buyer had written in pencil on the inside of the lid '1932 Havana' bought when visiting on a cruise. The box had a single cigar left in it, when I inherited it. Not a promising sign but I smoked it one Christmas as a starter & was pleasantly surprised that it was a reasonable smoke.

I have smoked Davifodd's from thje 80's & it all comes down to how they have been stored over the yrs. If they weren't in a humi, you can be sure they will be pretty tasteless. The ones in this pic don't look bad, certainly better than the box I was given to rejuvenate. I took this box of Davidoff No1's that had been kept in a drawer in a centrally heated house & despite bring the humidity up slowly over 6months, the cigar was tasteless. I waited a further year, just as bad & gave them away.

My concern with the Cohiba's is the poor presentation, is that how you'd send them to auction? It would have been far more attractive to have all the cigars & labels lined up & certainly given the impression they had been looked after.

Finally, I have had great cigars from '50-'90's that have been great, avge & barely fair, all down to storage conditions. Always worth investigating such finds but bid minimally & you might get lucky, bid high & you could be greatly disappointed.

Cheers Simon, great advise for potential budding at these auctions.
Sadly there is generally no information from the auction houses as to previous storage conditions, so it’s generally blind pot luck!
Nowadays too, with the 30% commission-it’s highly likely it will fail.
But there are some nutters out there. Take this for example.
These sticks in a wooden Humi- bids are in at 420 atm... Mental, what are they? It’s condition, they’ve had it.

Wow, they look horrendous, be a brave man to take a punt on those. Who's charging 30% hammer price? You're adding duty to hammer price?

I am mate yes, most houses now roughly 24% plus vat, although if you bid online through a search service you can add another 6% to that! 🤦🏼‍♂️

It’s crazy, they’ve all had it! I think I’m going to have a little experiment some time soon 😁

Then you'll need a nice cabinet to store them...
                          .--
I think I may finally have this CAD under control...

I’m desperately trying to keep my CAD under the radar! I had to sell the old Humi and buy a bigger one- because the old one was ‘broken’.......A cabinet will certainly get nads taken off!

The ones with Bands are from a 1492 Humidor from 1992:
A Cubatabaco 1492 humidor filled with 50 cigars of the same name was sold at an auction hosted by British cigar retailer C.Gars Ltd. for £25,000, or $31,860. | Cigar Aficionado

Jesus!!! Well that’s quite impressive! I guess that’s why they are where they are but what really can you do with them?
