  • Dry Boxing Strategies

For a while I had been really struggling with the burning of my cigar. It always seemed no matter what I did the cigar would go out after 4-5 mins of smoking. I originally thought it may just be a bad quality cigar and the next one will be better, but the problem persisted.

I can't remember exactly which one of you told me, but I was advised to dry box a cigar the day before smoking. This has been a game changer for me so far. Every cigar has burnt so well it's been a joy. I even noticed the RyJ I smoked yesterday burned exceptionally well and that was out of the humidor for 36 hours. My approach is to simply leave the cigar on my desk for the following day.

Do any of you have a dry Boxing strategy or any other process you follow to ready your cigar for smoking? Would make an interesting read and see the comparisons.

I am a fan of dry boxing though definitely no strategy to it and I rarely think far enough ahead to do it.

If it’s making a dramatic difference you may prefer your humi at a lower humidity, what rh are you storing at?

Cubans at 65% or even 62% perform better than 69%, which is good for NCs.

I have a 10 cigar capacity plastic travel humidor, which I use as my dry box. I tend to as a rule throw a weeks’ worth of Cubans in there if I suspect they may be too wet. (Point to note I’ve never had to dry box an NC or felt the need to.)

I smoke cigars from the dry box over a period of 24/48 hours anything up to 10 days and every time the cigar seems to smoke better - any cigars that make it unsmoked past the 10 day mark in the dry box and they go back in the humidor

I used to be obsessed with the 70:70 rule back when I first started smoking cigars but over the years I've kept reducing the humidity down to about 62....muy bueno!!!!

Strategy is a strong word. But dry boxing we hear time and again. I'm too disorganised to plan ahead. But smokes are around 65% most of the time. Nature permitting. The cabinet does hold humidity lower than the humidors used to. Which is good.

Certainly lower the humidity you store cigars at. Why is the 7070 pushed so much?

My American friends in humid places like Florida swear by 62 and even lower.

As for a stick going out, sometimes it is because they are needy and require a puff more often than you might think, with some Drew Estates they smoke alot and when the smoke dies down then you know you need to take a drag, it kind of tells you when you need to.

I think this difference between the best humidity for NC's & CC's is down to the construction. As we know NC's tend to have an easier draw, sometimes way too easy for me. With CC's they used to be much more packed & tightly rolled. If you keep you CC's at the same humidity as NC's i.e. 68o+ the CC's swell inside & sometimes cause the draw to become so tight they appear plugged, which many wouldn't if they had been stored at 62-65o & or dry boxed for a day of two. When you read of BOTL chucking stick after stick away calling them 'plugged' for modern CC's, I think this is the main problem as & haven't had a handful of CC's that I have had to ditch that weren't from the bad yrs of '98-'01 (of course the Perfect draw can help with ht eoccasional one that comes up).

One note to add is that many CC's are now being rolled to have easier draws, & therefore appear under-filled. If you have had a few easy drawing cigars from a box, then you could try slowly increasing the humidity & 'tightening' it up. Never tried it but would be interesting to give it a go.

I am also to disorganized for the dry box process and I also love to be able to choose on the spot what I will be smoking. So no dry boxing for me.

RH is at 62 and I must say I’m pretty happy with the results
