  • What makes you collect?

After having a bit of a clear out earlier this year, i did wonder why i has so many cigars .... now at c1000 it was a modest amout in comparison to the big dogs here, but was quite diverse. I cleared out some sticks i wanted to try but never did.

At the heart of my collection are:

    cohiba robusto
    erdm choix supreme
    cohiba medio siglo
    dip 2
    epi 2
    hdm pr

then, it goes into a broad and varied cast.... i discovered that i tend to explore with LE/RE pr’s more than anything...

So all in all i figured i collect firstly out curiosity, and then collect tried and tested to age, so i can have a steady stream of quality smokes....

    how about you?

    Matt

Hehe, my collection has exploded, and seriously, there are boxes in there that I didn’t know I had😎
I collect to build stock for 15 years un-worryed smoking of aged cigars 😎

I trimmed back to find my focus on the smokes I really want, but my outlook of banking future moments of happiness remains the same 👍 think we’re on the same path!

I'm only at about 1/2 this amount but already I feel the CAD is getting a bit out of hand! Currently the thought of my wife discovering how much I spend on cigars keeps me in check. I only keep a few special boxes but the bulk of my collection is regular production stuff for smoking now. The reason I buy more than I smoke is 1) to age and 2) because I like variety. I love the idea of collecting rare/exclusive boxes but I do wonder if it's better just to smoke the good stuff now as you never know what's round the corner! You can't take them with you and all that....

I wonder how it would go down if one directed that one's full collection of CCs joined the ride to the local crem when the time comes. BOTL could assemble on the nearest hill downwind to enjoy the send off...

I still don't see myself as collecting really I just have cigars I plan to smoke!

I've moved away from buying as much more recently focusing back more heavily on cigars I really enjoy. Lost interest in most of the RE's and LE's other than the occasional stand out and really is just about having a good enough selection that I have cigars ready to smoke and I know I'll enjoy for years to come

I hear you on spending too much on a hobby, I am the same with watches and as the prices have gotten crazy in the last few years I have been forced to tell the family about their used prices and where they can get the best prices so should anything happen to me they know the true value of my collection.

Trying to rationalise my behaviour, but it makes no sense.

Here's a graph of my purchase count per annum - numbers redacted because CAD.

My intent was always to buy to always smoke cigars that are at least a few years matured and have a backlog. Which I've done now, so in theory I've slowed down.....

But I'm just buying CC like a scatter gun. I mean, I'm not buying what's on my want list.

I've a few boxes that I might try to sell on in 5 years or so. But other than that, it's for eventual consumption.

                  .--
I think I may finally have this CAD under control...

I never intended to collect when I started out last year, was just a nice way to relax on a warm evening after work however after tasting the difference a bit of age makes it made sense to grab a few boxes for what I’d enjoyed smoking and trying them over time.

Currently at around 250ish, with about 30 of those being NC’s. I’ve got a 28 PC sampler on the way from our friends down under that should see me through until March and then I have a trip to Cyprus planned for May so I’ll hopefully be able to go on that and grab a couple of boxes while there.

I’d say I average 1-2 smokes a week, as long as I have enough variation to smoke one from each box every couple of months I’m happy. I also try and pick bits and pieces up from here to give some variety and usually a bit of age.

My collection is currently 2,400 & was grown to enable me to always smoke aged cigars, with the initial aim to be 3-5yo but now many are 10yrs & still smoking just fine. Can't say I have any that have become too mild or faded. Of course the way a collection grows by buying more than you smoke. I smoke around 150-200 pa & was buying 300-500. My 'problem' now is moving my collection to the UK, prior to moving back in the next two yrs. This has already began, daughter took 50 back to Bournemouth on Sunday & McDee has very kindly allowed me to drop some off with him, that I can transfer down to Bournemouth in Dec. We are coming over to Bournemouth in the car in Nov & staying until New Year so by then I could have a third over & the rest will be taken att he new limit of 50 sticks per person, per visit. So just think before you allow your spending to start requiring additional coolidors. scubadors ect, your certianly tying up a lost of cash as a long term investment; although if required, at least cigars are easy to shift & post if you need to liquidate some stock.
