  • Help me get started with Diplimaticos

Ok, so i just smoked a lovely Diplimaticos tres petit corona. Very nice, beautiful thick smoke, overall excellent flavour. I've decided I'd like to try some of thier other puros. Can anyone recommend a specific vitola to me?

I am one of a few on the forum that actually like this brand. Try a #2 and #4.

#4 is less complex, but still a nice smoke for the money.

By tres petit I think you mean Dippy 5. Excellent little smoke IMO. The Dippy 2 as Dawg says is brilliant too!

Well they are made in the Montechristo factory, originally for the French market, and are one of the cheapest cuban hand rolled long-filler brands available. In fact many people over the years have seen them as just Montys with a different band (and a cheaper price!) as their sizes are identical too.

My theory (but it is only a guess - and possibly wrong!) is that the factory uses the brand to train rollers on. Paiste (my favourite brand of cymbals) did this years ago in their Swiss factory and used identical cymbal pressed discs to the famous (and very expensive) 2002 line but gave them to trainees for the hand-hammering and called them 505's, but essentially they were the same product at half the price (as a result, and because many people didn't realise this, the no longer made 505's are now collectors items for those drummers 'in the know' because you can occasionally find them sold s/h at bargain bin prices). But all that aside, if you like Montys then these are a perfectly good alternative if you struggle to afford them! That said, I've noticed that a lot of UK retailers have good offers on certain Montys right now (20-25% discounts) that mean they have been brought down to nearer the Diplomaticos price band anyway...

I always have a box of 2s as really reliable "go to" cigars... I really like them.

I regret to say you're late to the party.

Great cigars. The #4 and 5 have been discontinued because Habanos is run by fools.

There is no Montecristo factory. The Montecristo line is rolled in many factories everywhere on the island (the best boxes often being those from the Upmann factory), and so was the Diplomatico line.
("was" because they were all discontinued except the No.2)

Smoked quite a few Dip 4's and 5's...great little smokes.
Only have smoked one Dip #2 and it didn't quite do it for me. I rather have a Monte#2, BBF, VR Unicos, P2 or a H.Upmann #2 instead.

With that being said, I'll have to give the Dip #2 another try.

I bought my first box of Dippy 5's on Thursday, lovely little short smoke, want to try Party Shorts though, many on here rave about em.

Diplomaticos No.2 was always a cheaper Montecristo 2 for me; a little more rustic but pretty similar. Until recently...

I have had some great ones recently: full of rich and spicy flavours. As far as I'm concerned they are not (or no longer) using the same tobacco as Montecristo

They have NEVER been made with the same tobacco as Montecristo!
AFAIK they tasted different 10 years ago, they still taste different?

My favorite is the No.1 with a bit of age, it's a very good lonsdale, totally different from the Monte1.

Good choice, sir. The Dippy No2 is a great cigar (as far as I'm concerned ).

I concur. Watched them rolling Monte, Diplo and H. Upmann No.2s in the Upmann factory and the packets of tobacco were different (with different code numbers) for each blend.
My Dip 2s from 2006 are a shade darker and a shade tastier than the 2007 Monte 2s in my collection. And The Dip No.1s from 2001 (bought just last Feb) are amazingly good.
