  • Cabin build

So my new cabin (ok, it's a shed really) is arriving today.

I'm in the middle of putting in some decking aswell so the build will be on hold till that job is done, the ground is ready though.

Been thinking about the electrics. For those that have electrics in their cabins, how have you gone about it, outdoor extension with armoured cable or did you get an electrician etc?

nice ! its going to be good..

Love my shed , cant really help with the electrics, if you want it done properly its going to be an electrician. I just have everything wired to an extension lead thats plugged into an external socket when i want to use the shed. Its not ideal but does the job and i tend to unplug it when its not in use.

what are you planning for heating and ventilation? i have a masisve inline fan plumbed in and just an electric heater , it really heats it up nicely. I also have a small log buner but i still need to get that set up! might be a jopb for the end of the year now.

The weather's taken a turn back to cold again. If only it was ready 😁

        Looking forward to the journey!

I was thinking an outdoor extension for a temporary measure but will pobably want something more permanent. I've got a convection heater that does the job in the conservatory so presume that will work fine, got a kitchen extractor fan that i use in the garage now so will hook that up, although I'm probably going to look at an air purifier long term.

Don't I know it, I'm putting some decking in the other half of the garden which has taken slightly longer than I planned so trying to finish that in the cold at the minute so I can clear the wood that's now piled on the space for the cabin.

For my greenhouse I ran an extension from an existing outside socket through an underground armoured cable.

I have an outdoor socket and then armoured cable to a consumer unit in the cabin which supports a ring and a lighting circuit. The cable also carries wired internet via a Powerline connector.

Cheers guys, so looks like I'll need an electrician if I want something permanent in there and to keep it all legal etc. That's an interesting point on internet aswell, haven't checked what the wifi is like up there, might be a good addition to have it wired.

Looking forward to seeing this! yes agree with previous posts - electrics get done by electrician - they do a good job and lay down armour cable. At the same time get them to lay armour cable for ethernet - I wish I had done. Although a mesh wifi system does the job well if devices have line of sight between cabin and house.

Couple of questions, will you be insulating the cabin (floor, roof, walls) and had you thought anything about heating/cooling? If you need any tips, there is a thread on here about building a cabin I built a couple of years ago - search for Vitola's Smoking Cabin or Summerhouse

Cheers, remember your build a while ago as it was very impressive, I've just had another run through. Mines much more of a budget version, although I've pick a shed thats a similar shape to yours, but a smaller 8ft x 8ft. I hadn't thought about insulation to be honest, theres not enough room to do the walls as it's only just big enough for the sofa I was going to put in there. I was thinking about just getting it put up, adding heater, tv and fan and then see how it is, maybe adding improvements later if needed. As long as it gets me out the garage i'll be happy at this stage.

As much rock wool as you can cram under the floorboards and an insulation layer between the roof and the felt will do a lot of good.

                            What a day.

Well it's in, managed to do it on my own in a day today in which I wouldn't recommend to anyone. Some unforecasted hail, rain and wind didn't help matters

Just one smashed window pane to replace and a few finishing touches and hopefully I'll be having a cigar tomorrow.

That was quick! Great work! Especially in the winds. Looking fine.
