  • Cuban Petite Coronas Sampler from our sponsor - not cheap - £125 / 8 PCs

For those with deep full up pockets or who cant shop around there's a PC Cuban sampler popped up on the sponsor's site that's a good broad selection. In one of my favorite vitolas. I'm a slower smoker so up to an hour each for me. As theres a little light at the end of the weather tunnel might be worth preparing.

Thats £15 per cigar on average for 8 cigars

You might be able to knock £1 or 2 by shopping around, but postage :-/

    B.

I'd be expecting a box of petit coronas for that price! F**k UK prices.

At least if you're buying a third of a box you're only overspending on a third

I love a PC but not at £15! Robustos in 2019 were only around £18 from memory

Alright look. We can't just k keep going over how expensive cigars are in the UK. Lol. We know this. When we can travel again we have more options. Hell, if I'm fully loaded, no storage, I'll happily bring back stuff for you guys when I'm traveling around.

This was just a pointer to a nice sampler. I made the expensive statement in the original post so people are aware.

It's cheaper to do a weekend trip and but a copy of boxes than walk into your local. Way it is.

Much as it may cost more I will always support retailers here where possible as well. If all the lounges and shops go too how long til we’re not allowed anywhere to plus shops are great for getting new people into it

Absolutely, if you do not give some support to retail, then they will disappear, much like the situation of shops closing on the High Street which is now producing cries of anguish by short sighted customers.

They are expensive but you always know what your getting and where you stand. My first ventures into cigars, pipes and pipe tobacco was here, and i will continue to buy bits every now and again. The service is excellent and the products are always in tip top condition.

Not to go too far off topic but if a product in a high street shop was 3-4x as expensive as you could get it for online most wouldn’t pay it. Going to a lounge is different as you’re paying for the social aspect, like going to a restaurant, you could cook the same food at home much cheaper but you enjoy the occasion with friends or family.

Back on topic, it’s actually a very nice sampler that gives you a taste of different Marcas. Going away and bringing boxes back is great but only if you know you like what’s in the box before you have 24 more of them.

You can buy a can of Kronenbourg in a supermarket for less than a quid. Drinking one pint of it in the pub can cost up to £5.

People love going to the pub don't they?

Well, they used to. I'd rather get pissed at home though. If I wanted to sit outside and drink lager I'd do so on my own property for a fraction of the price.

Meh. There really is no excuse for cigars to be so expensive in the UK, people just scream TAX but that isn't as much as you expect. Retail cigar shops in the UK are mostly in rich parts of the cities and heavily concentrated in London, cigars are seen as the privilege of the rich and they are priced accordingly. The importer has a stranglehold over the market and perpetuates this defunct idea of EMS. /moan over. Nice sampler

£3.05 per 10g tax on cigars
About the weight of a petite No2.
                          Uk retail £20.99
                          Spain £5.70
There is no doubt selling cuban cigars is a very lucrative business.

U.K. cigar pricing - it’s not price gouging, so we'll show our workings.

Let’s start out with the fact that we, as like all importers and retailers are in the tobacco business to make a profit. A fair profit in return for the work we put into selling cigars. No one goes in to retail or distribution as a non-profit, that’s just not realistic.

Our prices since we launched in February last year are some of the lowest in the country. We wanted to make an impact on the U.K. cigar scene with our exclusive boutique New World brands and absorbed a huge amount of tax and duty, in order to bring you the most affordable cigars. Sadly we can no longer afford to absorb this amount of tax and duty if we wish to continue bringing the best New World cigars.

New shipments will be priced to reflect the reality of British tax and duty. They will be surprising price rises but we have taken a hit on our own margin to keep them as realistic as possible.

In order to be transparent with our price rises, we will show you how prices are calculated - something no one wants to show you.

Many of you know that tobacco duty is £305.32 per KG but that’s not just it. We will show you a calculation for shipments from the USA.

What difference does the shipping country of origin make?
Many countries which ship tobacco (not Cuba or USA) are on a list which are customs excise duty exempt, that’s 25%. Also at the end of last year, the Trump government imposed a 25% import tax on U.K. goods which resulted in a retaliatory 25% import tax on USA imported goods.

For example, a new delivery of 9.94kg of cigars costs us:

                            Customs duty 25% £755.58
                            USA retaliatory tax 25% £755.58
                            Customs vat 20% £1533.67
                            Customs excise £3034.88

                            Total £6079.71

We are VAT registered so can remove the VAT paid leaving £4546.04

That’s £457.35 per kg, more than the £305.32 per kg smokers talk about. That’s £0.458 per gram of cigar.

Your average robusto weighs about 13 grams, so just the tax and duty on that cigar would be £5.96

So a robusto costs us $2.70 and a box is 20 cigars = $54 and costs us on average $5 to ship per box = $59.

At the last purchase the exchange rate was £1: $1.32

                            $59 = £44.70
                            Tax and duty per cigar is £5.96 x 20 = £119.20
U.K. shipping is about £5 per box (the cost of transport from airport to storage)

Your box is now £163.90 per box. Now that’s the cost without a single penny of profit added.

The average margin would be 40% and so 40% Gross Profit on this box = £65.56 (note this isn't the profit we actually make, as out of this comes all our other costs including storage fees, website costs, sales fees, card provider charges, the list goes on...)

The box price is now £229.46 and of course we have the final cost to add which is our friend, VAT at 20%. This brings us finally to a retail price of £275.36 or £13.79 each.

And that’s how a “cheap” box of cigars becomes a U.K. priced box of cigars. It's a sad reality, but doesn't make for pretty reading we know. Do get in touch if you have any questions for us.
