  • Smoking room/study

    Hi guys

I’m planning to do some renovations at home, and part of the job is to do a new study for me as the kids will have their own study areas in bedrooms, and can get out of my current study/office.

I was thinking about doing it as a combo of study/smoking/whiskey room since I’m feeling the pinch of smoking on cold days outside.

Do you have any suggestions on people that build these type of rooms, materials to use (assume leather furniture is best and not fabric), ventilation systems for proper airflow to not smell up the rest of the place (which might get me into big trouble!) etc

I’m happy with the humidors I have, but would possibly consider a small built in job if it’s not ridiculously expensive.

As it’s still a potential idea in my head, any help or ideas is really welcome

When you say might get you in trouble, how’s their sense of smell?!

Different people have different tolerances but smoke smell is far from easy to avoid. A decent air purifier can be effective at removing the smoke but the smell tends to stay only thing I’ve found that seems to actually work for the smell is an ozone generator but then I’m definitely fussy when it comes to smoking indoors and the smell!

Other than that design build etc is pretty much down to what you want it to be like. Doesn’t need anything particularly special other than as you say avoiding soft furnishings is a good idea and decent ventilation to the outside.

Following this thread with great interest.... I have a man cave with a large green table in it... I want to install some sort of half decent extraction so when I have a weather affected cigar I can flick the extractor on and suck the worst of the smoke and smell out..

Good luck with the much grander sounding study / smoking room....

To add to my previous comment for air purifiers look at their CADR rating (and get one that has been independently tested for this). If you’re smoking in the room you’ll want it to be able to purify the full room at least 5 times an hour. So do the maths from the size of room for power you’ll need. The blueair smoke stop filters are better than most too for absorbing the smoke smell.

Thanks for the insight. Definitely want to make sure there’s over-provision from an extraction point of view. Funny enough I’m the sensitive one when it comes to smells, and I don’t particularly like the stale smoke scent so it needs to be pretty clean.

I’ll check out the ozone generator as well. I remember using something similar for my aquarium at home a long while back.

The study will have doors/windows that open to a patio which will also help with ventilation too.

We use a couple of things in the cigar room at home, which whilst separated from the lounge by a patio door is usually open most of the time.

This runs all the time and auto senses when the air is smoky, working harder then to clear the smoke.

Roger provides clean air in rooms of up to 66 m2 and is ideal for use at home or in the office. With his two sensors this mobile room air purifier continuously measures the quality of the air and immediately detects pollutants such as unpleasant smells, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), fine dust, pollen, viruses and bacteria*. Roger removes 99.3% of coronaviruses (SARS-CoV-2) from the air within an hour**. If the air quality deteriorates, the air quality indicator lets you know by changing colour and adjusts the cleaning performance automatically in intelligent auto mode. The more polluted the air, the higher the level of performance will be. The beautifully shaped air purifier now has a washable, textile pre-filter – as well as an integrated Sanitized® hygiene function. The Dual Filter™ – the heart of the air purifier – is a combination of a HEPA filter and an activated carbon filter. The highly efficient HEPA filter removes pollutants such as fine dust, allergens, pollen, viruses and bacteria from the air while the activated carbon filter adsorbs gases present in the air. Besides the timer function and the night mode, Roger’s impressive features also include Wi-Fi: you can monitor the air quality in real time and control all his functions via an app on your smartphone – so you can even guarantee healthy air at home while you are out and about! Filtering of viruses Test results show that air purifier Roger from Stadler Form can remove 99.3% of living SARS-CoV-2 viruses** which cause COVID-19 from the air. According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), “when used correctly, air purifiers can help reduce pollutants in the air in residential buildings or enclosed spaces, including viruses.”*** An air purifier like Roger can help reduce the risk of viral infections and thus provide his family and anyone else in the house with the best possible protection against becoming infected with the coronavirus. An additional test confirmed: air purifier Roger little efficiently filters 99.9% of all influenza A viruses**** and aerosols from the air in 60 minutes (tested in a 28 m3 test chamber). CADR 465 m3/h The CADR (Clean Air Delivery Rate) indicates the volume of purified air that the air purifier can produce. The value is determined by means of independent laboratory tests based on the AHAM standard. Higher CADR values mean that the air purifier can be recommended for larger spaces. The CADR is measured in cubic metres of air per hour. Air purifier Roger is suitable for rooms of up to 66 m2 and changes the air 3 times per hour. For heavily contaminated room air and for allergy sufferers, Roger is recommended for rooms of up to 39 m2 – with an air change rate of 5 times per hour. Polluted indoor air The air indoors is 2–5 times more polluted than the air outside. We spend approx. 90% of our time indoors and are constantly exposed to this pollution. Typical impurities are volatile organic compounds (e.g. formaldehyde), fine and suspended dust, unpleasant odours as well as viruses and bacteria. Allergy sufferers are also troubled by pollen and the excrement of dust mites. Optimally purified air leads to a great sense of wellbeing, improved vitality, and fewer illnesses. Roger, Roger little and Roger Plus provide the perfect help to free the air of pollutants. Air quality indicator Roger shows the quality of the room air. He continuously measures the quality of the air with his sensors. The air quality indicator lets you know if air quality deteriorates by changing its colour (blue = good, orange = medium, red = poor). Pre-filter The textile pre-filter removes coarse dust particles and pollutants from the air. By doing this, it protects the Dual Filter™ and prolongs its service life. The integrated Sanitized®**** hygiene function protects the preliminary filter against microbial growth. The textile pre-filter can be washed at 30 °C on a cold wash delicate cycle. The antimicrobial protection is guaranteed for at least 20 washes. Based on normal use, we recommend washing the pre-filter every 3 months while allergy sufferers are recommended to wash it once a month. Dual Filter™ technology The Dual Filter™ is the heart of the air purifier. It is a combination of a HEPA filter (H12) and an activated carbon filter. The HEPA filter removes pollutants out of the air, such as fine dust, pollen, viruses and bacteria. Particularly suitable for allergy sufferers – Roger bears the ECARF quality seal. The activated carbon filter adsorbs gases present in the air (bad odours, tobacco smoke, formaldehyde, toluene, volatile organic compounds, etc.) and filters them out of the air. Filter exchange The capacity of the Dual Filter™ is limited, which means that it must be replaced every 8–12 months, depending on its exposure to air and gases. Thanks to the intelligent filter timer, Roger shows exactly when the filter needs to be replaced. Filtering of particles Roger’s Dual Filter™ produced convincing results during the TÜV test (particle cleaning test). Roger traps 100% of 0.255-micrometre particles (tested based on DIN standard 71460-1:2006). For comparison: a human hair is 80 micrometers thick. So, the filtered particles are 313 times smaller. Device control via an app (Wi-Fi) Roger is equipped with Wi-Fi and can be controlled via the smartphone app «Smart Life – Smart Living». The air quality can be monitored and controlled via the app which enables all Roger’s functions to be controlled in real time. An additional child protection function which is only available via the app deactivates the buttons on the device for a chosen period of time. Version of Roger up to the end of 2020 vs. the current version of Roger The current version of Roger (as of 2021) has a classic elegance about it. The air purifier now has Wi-Fi which enables the device to be fully controlled via an app on your smartphone. In addition, the grille and the pre-filter have been replaced by an anthracite-coloured, textile pre-filter with integrated hygiene function.

This was recommended by someone on here, might have been Peejay, and clears the lingering smell. After a heavy herf, I can close the room off, but it on max and there is no smell the next day.

My wife also bought me a cool fragrance lamp which just keeps the room smelling fresh

Fan noises drive me nuts. I remember a conversation here talking about having an additional fan to create flow of air toward the extractor.

I think if I was having an indoor smoking lounge I'd want two doors between it and the rest of the house and maybe a ceiling mounted extractor in the space between them.

You want to extract the smoke before it has a chance to linger, fan noise is horrible so externally mounted extractors would be a good choice, keeping all the noise outside. Extracting the smoke first means the air purifiers will work a lot better.

Good subject & interesting tips, can be used in an outside Summer House/Office as well & then no risk of smells or smoke in the house so that's what I am hoping to have in our new house but if we have a Conservatory, I'll use that in the meantime.

I don’t think I’d ever be brave enough to try smoking indoors, the internal garage is bad enough for smell finding it’s way in to the house through anyway possible.

Always interested to see how these turn out though. One day I’ll hopefully have a nice summer house like a few of the members here

Really good points on the way smoke tends to sneak it’s way out and linger where it shouldn’t. I like the idea of “airgapping” with two doors - not sure how the aesthetics will pan out but it’s probably one of the more technically sound solutions.

Still working on floor plans, so depending on what else is on that level it might not be too bad even if some scent leeches out. Will be redoing the HVAC in the entire house so it’s a good opportunity it’s to over engineer some dedicated strong and silent extraction for that room in particular and ensure no stale air mixing into the rest of the system or that’ll totally do me in.

Hopefully it all ends up working out and I can post some construction updates here for everyone.

Thats what I'm thinking. An inline fan outside of the room in an adjacent void. Fairly high flow fan. Extract point close ish to where smokers will be sitting. Have it running to pull as much of the smoke out pronto. Not really wanting anything expensive (would rather spend the money on cigars!) I've been thinking about just a surface vent, ducted to a large inline fan, ducted to outdoors.

The Macanudo Lounge in NYC has a system that blows air up from the floor and sucks across the ceiling. You can't smell the person next to you's cigar.
