Reading Matter

So more and more I seem to not want to watch TV. Maybe it’s the depressing news about our economy/war/pandemic/political incompetence or the lack or original programmes that has meant I am leaning back to picking up a good book to escape reality.

Of course as cigars is now my latest hobby (obsession) I find myself searching for a good cigar book to read.

At the moment i am very much enjoying Nick Hammond’s Around The World in 80 Cigars.

If you haven’t read it yet it is brilliant at transporting you to far off lands where Nick gets himself into mischievous adventures whilst smoking some delightful cigars - highly recommend!

On that note can anyone recommend any other cigar books worth a read?? I am after anything which either talks about the history or the process of cigar making - or just some good stories Cuban stories or similar.

I don't have any specific cigar book recommendations but I do find myself reading so much more after starting cigar smoking. Not much beats an hour or two to yourself with a good smoke, a good book and a good whisky to hand 😁

Recently finished the first book of the Broken Earth trilogy, quite interesting sci-fi/fantasy series.

Good thread starter, sure this will have legs. Lately I have only been reading medical text books, particular on blood chemistry. Pretty dry & beyond the capability of Offshore to take & read samples but a requirement of the NHS ALS course. So now I can go back to my more usual reading matter pike fishing & Jaaag's.

I just found and bought it off Amazon for a grand total of 68p in very good condition! The shipping was double the price! But thank you for the recommendation!

I also love a good true crime book - most recently over the summer I read the biography of Totò Riina - The Boss of All Bosses of the Sicilian Mafia - it’s pretty gruesome but still a very interesting read.

Nicholas Foulkes - Cigars: A Guide To is excellent and on Amazon Prime.

I started it recently but put it down to keep for my upcoming holiday.

I will do.. and just being a little cheeky.. is there a number 2 coming? If not.. please do consider it! Personally I loved the escapism from each story to the next!

Also - it might be a promotion for the competition- but are there any other books you would recommend??

Thanks BB - yes, Book No.2 is in the pipeline, hopeful to publish late next year - may even crowdfund it. Will keep the Forum posted on developments as we go. In terms of other books - there's nothing quite like mine, if I may say so, in terms of cigar stories, but I learned a lot from books like Min Ron Nee's, Theo Rudman's, Simon Chase. In another almighty bout of narcissism, I would also highly recommend Cinco Decadas: The Rise of the Nicaraguan Cigar, which I wrote to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Joya de Nicaragua. You'll struggle to get hold of the coffee table book, but if you log onto www.astoryofresilience.com, you should be able to register to read a 'soft' copy, and it will give you a real insight into how the tobacco world has changed in the last couple of decades, as well as an amazing story of one of the world's great cigar factories. I hope that's helpful.
