  • Smoking times...?

Having been doing a LOT of reading on here, one thing that I keep coming across is the need to match your cigar choice to the time that you have available to smoke it.

So far I've mainly been smoking Corona & Mareva size cigars and they have been lasting me about an hour, maybe a bit less.

One problem that I have in choosing what cigars to buy next is that I don't know how long they will last. I can see that longer, fatter cigars will last longer, but how long.

Is there a guide anywhere that can give me the approx smoking times for various Vitolas so that I can start to pick out the right sizes?

    Hi Will,
all people smoke at different rates & sometimes you adjust your 'normal' smoking pattern because of the way the cigar is acting... so it's hard to say,,,
Your generalisation is probably the nearest you'll get but people do post 'their' smoking times in reviews.
Best thing to do is less work so you have more time for smoking..
I do smoke a helluva lot more now I'm semi -retired & I enjoy it more so do take the time if you can...

Tres Petit Coronas, such as Party Shorts, Monte 5, Reyes : 35 to 40 mins

Petit Coronas, such as Siglo2, Monte 4 : 45 mins to 1 hour

      Robustos, SDN4, JL no.2 : 60 mins to 75mins

Corona Gorda, such as Siglo IV, JL no.1, Punch Punch : 65 mins to 80 mins

As a comparison, I normally take about 45-60 minutes for a robusto.

I'll normally assume that robusto, PC, TPC and smaller will be under an hour. Anything larger I will not light unless I have nothing else to do that day, mainly as I don't have enough experience with them to know how long they'll last! I generally only smoke double coronas when camping.

Thanks seanbeer! Just the sort of very basic guide that I was looking for!

Full time job and no smoking in the house really cuts down the smoking opportunities and I've not smoked enough variety to have got my own smoking rates worked out. Sure it'll come with time but it's dead handy to have this bit of guidance as a starting point...

I guess everyone's times are a bit different, I am sometimes amazed how long some people can take smoking a stick, how many times do they re-light, with such long rests between puffs?
For me, I rarely put the stick down & rarely re-light (unless I am herfing & talking far too much, in which case I have to re-light constantly).
                  Demi-Tasse 15mins, Marvela 45mins, Robustos 60mins, Churchill's 90mins, DC's 100mins+, A's 120mins & Diamedes 150mins!
One other point that must make a big difference is where you stop smoking. I usually stop at the band. Many others remove & continue & therefore take longer to finish the same cigar.
