  • Members of Boisdale...

    Hi guys,

Just been rolling through the Boisdale website. Although I haven't had a chance to head to the new Canary Wharf location yet, it does look pretty beautiful, and has tempted me to head down there tonight with the misses for some dinner and a smoke. Not to mention the whisky bar, that alone would sell it to me! If it lives up to everything I think it will, I'm pretty sure I will attempt to become a member, as some of the benefits look great currently!

Is anyone here a member? If so, how do you find it? Glad you became a member? Will you be renewing when your current membership expires? How are all the benefits?

I also have one main question, what is the difference between annual, country, overseas and joint membership, aside from the cost obviously? I cant seem to find out anywhere on the site, however im hoping that the overseas one might be more suited to me, as I only spend half the year in the UK.

    Thanks guys

I'm not a member of Boisdale, however the membership categories are fairly common across all clubs, so here's a fairly general overview:

    Annual membership - normal membership.
Country membership - this is for people who live 'in the country' (actually, it doesn't matter if you live in the countryside or a city, most London clubs consider anything over a certain distance to be 'the country' - somewhere mystical and slightly peculiar... ) Essentially, if you live more than 100 miles (for example, not sure the exact distance that Boisdale set) from London then they think you will probably use the benefits of your membership less (by dint of not being near to the club), so shouldn't have to pay full rates.
Overseas membership - similar principle to Country membership, but for those who live overseas.
    Joint membership - self explanatory.

As a general rule, all membership levels receive the same benefits.

I note that you split your time between London and LA... If you have a permanent residence in LA (or for that fact, a good friend who's willing to keep/forward mail for you ) then you could always go for the overseas membership. I know one American who lives in London, barely a fifteen minute walk from his clubhouse, who uses a relative's address back in the States to get cheaper membership. Tut tut...

      Hi Detroit,

I'm just about to join (through my company) and Simon is quite right in his explanation of the memberships - I can confirm that the distance for the 'Country' membership is 50 miles.

      It's a smashing place - you'll love it

        Fantastic,

Have booked a table tonight for dinner and will go check out the terrace and library afterwards! I will talk to them tonight about membership, and which is best to go for. I have a permanent address in the states, so the price difference would be beneficially as I am only here half the year, so ill see if a qualify for that tonight.

Will let you know how I found it once I get back, pretty sure Im going to fall in love though, and dragging me away from the whisky bar is going to be a hell of a challenge!!

Mate...the whiskey bar is a sight to behold - when we were there, the bar staff climb up onto the bar-back to reach the bottles (as I remember, there are about six shelves high of the stuff...)

          Have a great evening.

Well my evening has been served with an unpleasant twist...The restaurant was fully booked up, the bar too! I should have really known, with it being a Friday and all! Ah well, Im probably going to take a trip down there next week during the week, try and catch it on a quieter afternoon and enjoy the whisky and smokes.

I had a look through the whisky menu Steve, and that alone was something of greatness, I actually dont know where Im going to start. There is so much on there I have been eager to try for a while, so I think im just going to have to close my eyes and point (or maybe just pick something on the top shelf to watch them climb up it! Do you remember what you had last time you were there?

I really like the look of the Library too, so hopefully it will be a bit quiet one day in the week to relax in there with a glass of red!

              Evening Jay,

Best laid plans of mice and men, eh? Sorry to hear about this evening's plans - as you say; it's Friday and they've live music on tonight, so I guess that's partly why it's soooo busy.

Re: whisky - I had a Glenmorangie 10yr 100 proof - outstanding Mind you, it's a bit like throwing arrows at a dartboard...no idea what you're gonna 'hit', but you've a pretty goood idea it's gonna be good...

I'm planning on attending the 'Gin through the ages' tasting event on the 24th - I'm a gin freak (amongst other spirits...hic) - should be fun.

              Have a great weekend mate.

Very nice indeed. However, lose the Beefeater and replace it with Plymouth Navy Strength... Then it would be damn near perfect.
