It's simple really, to maxmise your chance of winning your guess should cover as many numbers as possible so by selecting your number in the middle of the biggest gap between number your chances of winning are improved.

Simples.

It's like picking a lottery number 32 or higher because a lot of people pick birthdays as their special number. You have just the same chance as everyone else as picking the winning number but the way you pick your number can maximise your outcome.
