  • La Gloria Cubana ? Medaille d?Or No. 3

La Gloria Cubana Medaille d?Or No. 3
    Size: 175 x 28 ? Panatela Larga
    Smoke time: 1hour

Date: OSU 10 Source: Herzog am Hafen.

In Med. d?Or years this was a very young cigar. They have a reputation for outstanding ageing qualities.

Appearance: Long, skinny and looking more like a bowed ?Twiglet? than a cigar, the No. 3s share the same rough-look finishing and disregard for shade balanced wrappers that?s common to the Med. d?Or?s, the cap however was neatly applied and well finished. LGC overall presentation on the other hand is a totally different matter, all the Med. d?Or are packed 898 in smart varnished boxes.

Construction: The cigar felt medium packed stick and yielding along the entire length. The pre-draw was light to easy. The smoking draw was totally spot-on without any hint of difficulty throughout the entire hour of smoking. The burn started straight and never altered. The ash was crisp and compact and needed little in the way of tapping off. No relights, no corrections.

Flavour: The pre-draw aroma was light grassy tobacco. The start was light, subtle notes of fruit salad, honey and mild clean tobacco. The Cuban twang arrived at about half an inch in, it was citric, light and varied, sometimes with a lemon sourness and at other times something sweeter more akin to tangerines. (Hints of pepperiness could be picked up in retro-hale). The smoke although thin carried a pleasant floral/tobacco aroma. The sweet/sour flavours of the smoke so far were exceptional and became even better towards the start of the second third when they were joined by an underlying and very sophisticated biscuitlike flavour. Into the final third and the fruitlike flavours did something I wouldn?t have thought possible, they improved, becoming deeper and richer and more morello cherry/blackberry in taste. As a finale the flavours began to even out and became more mellowed ? simply excellent ? like smoking fresh, clean tobacco dipped in some exquisite light liqueur.

Overall: An exceptionally good cigar. Don?t be put off by the appearance, it?s not what the Med? d?Ors are about. It?s about flavour and finesse and character, and believe me the No. 3 has got it all and with plenty to spare. These are discontinued now, but I?ll be looking for box to join my 1s and 4s. If you get the chance of a single, grab it, you won?t be disappointed .... well, as long as you don?t try smoking it like a Robusto that is! The Torcedors who roll these are maestros of their art, how they manage to achieve such amazing and precise flavour delivery through something little wider than a Purito is simply bewildering ... but they do!

Great review of one of the finest cigar. I have smoked several boxes and never had ONE that wasn't perfectly rolled - one can't say so of others cigars of the same vitola under the ERDM and Rafael Gonzales brands…
