  • CAO OSA (Olancho San Augustin) LOT T (Torpedo)

Another first today, my first torpedo. I've taken to punching my cigars recently but snipped this one. That's when it occurred to me what with a torpedo its virtually the same thing. This fat little boy from Honduras comes in at 4.5" long with a ring size of 50. The wrapper is Honduras San Augustin, the binder Connecticut Broadleaf and the filler a mix of Honduran and Nicaraguan leafs. Handmade of course this is a box pressed little beauty with an oily rich brown wrapper that has a definite hint of mocha though the cold draw is earthy more than anything else. The fill felt good and springy though there was a little tightness where the neck starts to slim down, more on that later.
If you like mild then this is for you. At first lighting there was no pepper at all, just lots of very mild creamy smooth smoke with an aromatic spicy aroma. This is a nice cigar to be around for sure. It burnt well and evenly with a light grey ash that didn't drop until it reached an inch. The overall taste was tannic and woody and although there was a slight hint of pepper at the half way mark it soon disappeared. It left me wondering if I'd imagined it.
She needed a relight at the 2/3 mark which kept her alight until the neck started to slim down and then she went out decisively. Never mind, I had 75 minutes of pleasure and got a slight nicotine buzz.
Would I buy another? Its already in my shopping basket.

    Sounds good mate. Nice pics.
Just had a Royal Dutch mini on the walk from the bus stop. Nice little smoke for when you only have a few minutes.

For a little smoke I like a Quintero Purito myself.

Good review mate, sounds like a lovely cigar. Are CAO still part of the EMS? I've not seen them before

Showing my ignorance here because I don't know what the EMS is and neither does the first twelve pages of a Google search have anything relating to cigars. I have seen it on the JJ Fox website so perhaps someone could enlighten me.

EMS = English market selection. In other words, cigars that are made specifically to be sold in the UK. Other countries like America have their own selection, hence they have brands we can't buy over here

It stands for English Market Selection and is a stamp for Cuban cigar after they have gone through an additional inspection in the UK, more info can be found here:

What is EMS? An easily identifiable mark of quality and authenticity, introduced by Hunters & Frankau, for Havana cigars sold in the UK.

I'm guessing that would be a no then as it was a gift from Germany

Ah ok, that's fair enough then. We are led to believe that the EMS is the best so I guess we can't complain

I must admit this is one of the things I'm sceptical about when it comes to cigars - I've never noticed any difference in cigars I have smoked overseas and ones I have smoked in the UK (although I must admit I wouldn't consider myself an expert by any means!)

I also find that there is some sort of box to sort extra special cigars for the UK market slightly far fetched, I'm sure other markets would not be happy about that!

Of course I may be wrong, in which case I will be more trusting of what I hear in the future! 😊

Given what we pay for cigars in the UK I hope it's true. I don't feel so bad paying it if we are getting the best quality
