  • Vegueros Tapados

At first I was reluctant to review this petit corona that Paul gifted to me as I thought that it seemed pointless because most of us couldn't then buy them. Then I read on the Cuban Cigar Website that this is a confirmed release in cardboard packs of three or tins of sixteen so there is hope. The Tapados comes under the remit of a petit corona really measuring 4.7" x46 and has an unusual green and white band that does not have Habana on it but tucked around the back you will find 'P. DEL RIO' from whence they come.
The wrapper looks like a Connecticut in colour and has that familiar Cuban tobacco scent. It was quite springy to the touch and when I cut it I was momentarily worried as loose tobacco fell out leaving me with a hollow cap.
The cold draw was very light and had a slightly earthy taste.
This cigar lit easily and burned well without correction, it required a couple of relights but I may have been smoking it too slowly. The ash dropped every half inch or so.
The first half inch was a little bit astringent but then it settled down and was a very mild tasting and easy smoke. The flavour was predominantly like roasted pecans with a tea like dryness that came and went. There was no trace of pepper and I only purged it once.
The nearest thing I can compare it to would be a Choix Supreme. It was a very easy smoke with a pleasant flavour and no nicotine hit, this newbie would be a great morning cigar.

Who knows? According to the site it was a confirmed 2013 release. It was too good to be for local consumption only.

The band does look a bit NC.

Good review PeeJay. A little underpowered by the sound. A sort of Monte 'OPENised' version of Vegueros, which in the original production vitola did (and can still do) have a kick to them. Let's hope the Entreiempos and Mananitas are a good bit better.
If you want to, you can.
