  • Hoyo de Monterrey Le Hoyo de San Juan

Hoyo de Monterrey Le Hoyo de San Juan
Box code: EML Jul 14 - EMS
    Length 5 7/8 inches, Ring Gauge - 54
Taken from SLB cab of 25, kept at RH of 65

    First Impressions

An impressive cabinet, with the distinctive white band surrounding the cigars, new for this line. The cigars appear flawless. Very smooth Colorado wrappers with no prominent veins showing.. The initial aroma pre-lighting is woody, with a little hay and an underlying sweet note. No discernible ammonia smell at all.

I cut the cigar with a flat cut using my Palio cutter. The construction of the cigar is excellent, with a slightly oily sheen to the wrapper. The capo is well-defined to the shoulder of the cigar. The initial pre-light draw offers some resistance, but is not loose. The initial taste is sweet, with some woody tones. There is also a sweet honey like element.

    First third

The cigar lights easily - using a Xikar jet flame lighter. The cigar generates generous amounts of smoke - to be expected with a RG of this size...

Not a typical Hoyo profile in my opinion. The cigar is light as befitting most Hoyos, but has a definite spice that tingles the palate from the start - a peppery spiciness with some sweetness and has a very pleasant woody undertone.

The spiciness continues to build as the cigar is smoked down. The cigar remains light-bodied, but the spiciness is pleasant. No distinct herbal tones like I have found in other Hoyos.

    Second third

The spiciness builds gradually. I would not say this is a complex cigar by any means, but of course, it is still very young. The burn is flawless, with an even burn and no touch ups or relights necessary. The cigar is what I would call 'honest' - it gradually builds in spice but not strength, whilst offering copious amounts of smoke to assess and enjoy. I am sure more ageing (and perhaps a more discerning palate) would tease out further nuances and layers of flavour, and I am certain that as these cigars age, these will become more prominent.

    Final third and overall thoughts

I enjoyed this cigar. The spiciness continued to build until I finished the stick with approx one inch remaining. This is a fine light cigar - not strong or powerful by any means, but with a surprisingly spicy profile that builds throughout the smoke. I think it would be an ideal cigar if you have an hour to 90 mins to smoke after lunch, or would be an ideal cigar to start an evenings smoking with after a good dinner. The overall smoking time was 80 minutes. I feel these cigars are certainly going to improve as they age, and I look forward to seeing how they progress over the coming months...

Thanks for the positive comments chaps...On to another review, but this time to make it more interesting, I'd like you to pick which cigar gets reviewed:

          Partagas Selecion Privada
          Por Larranaga Sobresaliente
          Cohiba Robusto Supremo

I'll be interested to see what wins! [emoji2]

Good review Sludgie, the San Juan sounds an excellent cigar apart from this bit ... generates generous amounts of smoke - to be expected with a RG of this size... as I find too much smoke everwhelming these days (getting old).

Next review Partagas. If only to find out if they can live in comparison to the Lonsdales version Seleccion Privada.
If you want to, you can.
And, if you can, you must!
