I had this little stick yesterday during a day at sea whilst on a cruise with my family. I thought I better bring something with me just in case I couldn't find any shops that sold cigars on holiday. I did buy quite a few cigars in the end as we went to Spain as one of the stops on the trip, (I'm looking forward to Stagnetto's in Gibraltar tomorrow as well) but anyway I still smoked this one.
The maduro wrapper was a lovely dark chocolate colour with a grainy texture, nice tight seems and quite a firm box-pressed feel. The only downside was that it had a single cap. I don't know why Padron insist on single caps but it's certainly not helpful; I bit the bullet and cut past the stupidly small cap.
The cigar lit well and it got into the flavours from the off. The first third started off with a lovely natural sweetness on the draw and beautiful black pepper spiciness on the finish. I don't like spice but this was a very well balanced contrast between the sweetness on the draw and the earthy spice on the finish. Great start from this baby Padron.
Into the second third and the spiciness picked up slightly and the sweetness died down. I was pleased to see some background coffee flavours coming into play during this third, though I did get quite earthy at times.
The construction had been exceptional so far. My initial worries about the cap were not needed as the wrapper stayed solid and firmly attached to the cigar, not a hint of the wrapper unravelling, even with my cut that was past the cap. The burn line was perfect and the ash dropped off in about 1.5 inch chunks. Even in a slight wind at times (due to being on deck on the ship) this stick kept a razor sharp burn, it surely has to get 10/10 for burn and construction.
The last third really picked up from the previous earthy second third, a nice caramel sweetness came to forefront in the draw and the spiciness dropped back to the same as in the first third. Perhaps something of a deep fruity note came through in this last third; maybe cherry or a similar fruit.
I couldn't quite fully nub this stick as the smoke began to get hot when I had only an inch or so left. But apart from that this little puro performed very well. There was some nicotine kick considering its size but nothing that was overpowering; just enough strength I felt.
I find Padron haven't got as many positive reviews in the UK market compared to the US market but I have to agree with the general American consensus on this one; I would certainly buy again. I paired this cigar with a rum based cocktail and some James Brown in my headphones
This stick gets a 9.1 out of 10 from me. Perfect construction, bold flavours and great smoke output with some complexity, a very enjoyable smoke all-in-all.
