  • Perdomo 20th Anniversary

    Hey Guys,

I promised a while ago I would do a review on the Perdomo 20th Anniversary. The 10th Anniversary of Perdomo was the fist cigar I ever smoked. After I had a few cubans and others, I got myself one again to compare and it was rather boring and bland (the 10th anniversary).

Then I saw a sampler of the 20th Anniversary line with 6 different vitolas. They are almost twice the price so I was hoping for something more exciting. And I can say it hasn't disappointed. Now, as it was a sampler, I assume the cigars might have a few years on them, or at least one. In my experience so far, samplers are often a bit longer on the shelves and generally a bit milder because of that. But as it's a NC, I have no way of telling if that is true or just my perception.

Now lets get to the cigar.

This is the Churchill format of the sampler and the one I saved for the review.

First impressions. The filling is rather loose as with the others I smoked before. Soft to the touch. The cap is a bit crude maybe, but held nicely. otherwise it has a beautiful maduro wrapper and a band I really enjoyed. It also came of easily when needed.

From the very start this cigar had a great draw. Maybe slightly on the light side, but I prefer that. The result is thick smoke in abundance. This is a pleasure to draw from the very beginning.

A mild start, which is to be expected with this format. But already a strong flavor can be detected in the back. I am getting a sweet tobacco note with light spices through the nose. A bit in the first third a great dark fruit flavor mixes in. No hints of leather or wood yet. Not much complexity either, but I could tell this one is building up with every draw I take.

Still mild in the second third but the flavors are bursting out now. I am getting some leather notes now, mixing with the previous sweetness. Some darker earthy flavours come in and disappear again towards the end of the 2nd third. What I get more is fruit fruit fruit. And towards the end of the third this lovely cherry flavour I experienced with the other vitolas finally came through.

Now the cigar picks up power. It becomes stronger and very full bodied. But still in a nice way and with just a few traces of pepper that compliment the overall profile nicely and do not take over. Even through the nose, a delight. I can also detect a nice cream in the smoke, something that built up throughout the cigar but I only noticed it now on its own as it got stronger.

I started to get a nicotin hit towards the end and had to let it go. It's a lot of cigar and it was early in the day. This one would be better had on a nice summer evening.

I had a 2.5h smoke on this one and could have stretched it a bit futher even if I wanted to. The light packing did not result in a fast smoke at all. This is maduro sweetness at it's best. An interesting build up from the start that ends in a powerful finale.

It is not the cheapest NC but far from Padron prices. Especially in the US a real bargain compared with CC. I do not know how these smoke when they are fresher. But the sample box I had was fantastic. Each and every single one of them.

Get a few, try them, let me know what you think.

    Cheers, Niels

Thanks for the review, Perdomo is not a brand I have tried (From memory.) I will pick some up along with some Padron. You have persuaded me to give some higher end NC's a go again.

Then it was all worth it...

Let me know how you liked this one when you had a chance to try one. Would be interesting how my taste compares to some here on the forum. I am getting a box next month. If Deano ever reads my plea for PM, maybe we can swop some sticks.

We discussed aging of NCs before and this is a perfect example. I bought a box of these last year and they didn't live up to it. I tired them twice since and it was just a rather harsh and strong. Today I tried another one from the box and the cigar is perfectly smooth, no harshness at all. And the same beautiful cherry notes. 😊
