  • Leon Jimenes Petit Corona Vanilla

So after a few day delay here is my review of the Leon Jimenes Petit Corona Vanilla handmade in the dominican republic. Firstly after taking this out of it wrapper you get a surprise (most flavoured cigars smell overwhelmingly of the flavour that it gives the cigar a very chemical smell) the smell coming off this stick was an earthy tobacco smell with just that hint of vanilla on the end very aromatic and pleasing for this small 4" ring gauge of 38 cigar.

So on the light, the cigar lit very well a slightly uneven burn (ever so slightly due to me really) I should mention cutting the cigar was a fairly easy and it cut nice and clean. On the first inhale the first thing that fills your mouth is this very earthy coffee taste and then on the exhale a sweet ever so faint hit of vanilla which then coats your lips it was most similar to a late. The smoke itself smelled slightly aromatic enough that this would be a cigar no cigar smokers could easily enjoy as my wife (who doesn't like cigars found the smell tolerable although not as nice as my aromatic pipe tobacco).

I was advised when buying these cigars that taking your time with these would result in the best flavour profile and I can understand that advice as I progressed through the Cigar that coffee earth flavour become more prominent and if rushed would I think turn very harsh. However if you take your time and really let the smoke roll in your mouth the earthy coffee is muted by the wonderful sweet tasting vanilla hit on the exhale which continues onto your lips really making the experience much like a latte.

The Cigar itself is actually quite a medium smoke surprising as I expected a rather mild experience and as I came to the end of this Cigar that coffee and vanilla hit remain the entire way through with just a dash of spice coming through as I got to the second half (not really big enough to do in thirds) which did change the experience to an almost spiced latte again something that surprised me giving my previous dabbles with flavoured cigars.

Overall this was a very good NC cigar I wouldn't say it is really flavoured but on the aromatic side without a doubt although no way near pipe tobaccos, this was a very enjoyable smoke a short cigar that needs a bit of time to be enjoyed I went 40 minutes to really fully appreciate the flavours present which wasnt massive but more than I had expected going in and one that I will have to have again soon (which is good as I bought a box of ten).

Could it be improved? Yes of course the earthy coffee flavour while very nice will easily turn harsh on someone who looks at this Cigars small size and thinks they have a 10-20 minute smoke on their hands ruining the flavour this cigar can deliver. It is certainly no Cuban but given it is made in the La Aurora factory this is a very fine NC and for me is more preferable than a Quintero Panetella (which happens to be my least favourite cuban I know that many may disagree but there it is)

A cigar I would recommend without a doubt but again this needs some time and care taken with it so perhaps not for those looking for that everyday smoke, but a relaxing 40 minute smoke.

It may be infused rather than flavoured which would account for the better taste
