  • Undercrown Shade Gran Toro

I've wanted to try this lighter option from Drew Estate for a while and would most likely have gone for something smaller than a Gran Toro but this was what was available.
The wrapper is an Ecuadorian Connecticut and has very little scent despite being in cello. Because I was reviewing I cut the cap before lighting, the draw was very light and tasted faintly of just tobacco.

On lighting the first flavour was of toasted cereal with a slightly tannic edge. There was no lack of smoke which was smooth but not creamy. There was no hint of spice or bitterness for the entire length of this cigar and no purging was required.

The flavour developed into a light almonds flavour which remained constant to the end, no transitions from this stick.
Smoking time was just over an hour, the burn was perfect but the wrapper split slightly after I removed the band to avoid burning it.

Overall a mild and very pleasant cigar that I enjoyed but not box worthy.

Nice review PJ. I've had the UC Shade Corona before and I'd concur - a nice smoke and one I'd definitely revisit, but not box worthy. I personally prefer the regular undercrown range, something that I'd definitely like to get a box of.

Thanks for the review. I tried other variations of the Undercrown before and always got distinct pepper notes from it. So this sounds more pleasant.
