  • Hoyo de Monterrey Elegantes Nov 16

As I already like Hoyos I'll be honest and admit that it was the shape that attracted me to the Elegantes.
The wrapper had very little scent at all and this cigar was soft to the point of being underfilled especially at the narrow end near to the cap. Once cut the draw was very loose to the point that a lot of Cuban fans may not like it. The cold draw tasted faintly of hay and by faintly I mean barely.

One thing this cigar did from the outset was to produce masses of smoke, at one stage I had to wait for the cloud to clear before I could see what I was watching on the tv! For the first inch or so it had that familiar light Hoyo flavour but then it started to develop cereal notes with a tannic edge

    IMG_1028.jpg

The biggest change came when the ash dropped, suddenly the flavour intensified to a distinct and very pleasant nutty taste

    IMG_1029.jpg

The ash held nicely from here to the band and the flavour remained constant

    IMG_1030.jpg

Into the final third and I got a flavour I have never encountered before and I am not one for extravagant descriptions but the nearest thing I can describe it as is metallic cherryade. It wasn't entirely pleasant and required purging.

    IMG_1031.jpg

The burn remained good and no relights were required at all. When I gave it up I had been smoking it for 55 minutes but the last bit was so soft I could hardly hold it

Would I recommend it? Yes it was a good enjoyable smoke overall.

Good review, thanks PJ but sounds seriously under filled, not a good sign if that's common for this vitola. I'll await more reviews before trying. Easy draw & spongy feel doesn't appeal to me.

Bit of a shame the Elegantes didn't go that well PeeJay. But you do know it wasn't a proper Elegantes.

This is a proper Elegantes. http://www.ukcigarforums.com/showthread.php?15472-Friday-11th-April

Just came across this review again & thought I should add a couple of lines. I tried one 26th June, after picking one up at http://lacasadelhabano-brussels.be/

For once I decided to try one early to see if I wanted to buy more, whilst they are still available. Like PJ, I was also attracted by the dble figarado shape & even though I know, like Arf it isn't a traditional Elegantes vitola (why did they chose to name such a chunky shape as elegant?), which I am particularly fond of.

Like any Dble Figarado you have to be patient with the first few puffs, until it opens out a little. Hoyo flav came in quite quickly & as a Hoyo fan I was settling down o really enjoying this smoke. However the one thing that really let it down for me, was the other problem highlighted by PJ & that was the unfilled spongy feel. It really became extreme & from word I have had from others who have tried this cigar, have also reported this under filling. I suspect these are made using moulds rather than purely hand rolled, like the Cuaba's but I never had one of those filled before.
So in conclusion, it's an interesting cigar & worth trying if your a Hoyo fan but I won't be buying a box.

A good review Peejay, thanks. These cigars certainly look good, despite the underfilling.

Isn't the metallic taste tar coming through? That's what I could taste on a Monte 2 recently when the tar appeared.
