  • Old Henry Corona (natural)

I first heard of Old Henry, one of the house brands of Holt's in Philadelphia, from their catalog. The write-up was of course glowing, but I kept passing up this seemingly unglamorous Nicaraguan for the better known brands. I should have thought more about it, because 1) it's made by Pepin Garcia, and 2) Holt's is the kind of serious cigar shop that would go the extra distance to get a worthy cigar. When GSS asked about them, I decided it was time to give one a go. I smoked it tonight and am now in that bliss that follows an outstanding smoke.

Flavor: It started off medium-bodied, with a pleasant mix of earthy wood, fresh peppers, and sweet leather. A few draws into it, the flavor shot up to a full-bodied version of the above mix. It stayed that way to the end, keeping a nice multi-dimensional flavor. I ended it about 5 cm from the cap, and an hour later I'm still savoring the tasty finish.

Burn: The burn was even, and the ash was tight.

Construction: Nicely wrapped with an appealing, slightly oily corojo leaf of a consistent natural shade.

This hasn't supplanted my beloved Oliva Serie V, but it's a solid smoke. Definitely worth the price. I'll also try the maduro version, and will pick up a few more of the natural coronas for my humidor.

Nice review. Gonna have to get me some Serie V action though as well.
