  • H.Upmann Corona Junior - my first review

Ok guys, go easy its my first review!

So, the website I bought it from describes the Corona Junior as:

"This cigar is creamy with hints of coffee and some nutty flavour as well. This small havana promises to have a good future. Attractive, good draw, thick smoke with complex flavors for such a small cigar. Purely excellent."

On lighting, it was very harsh...no hint of creamy at all and I interpreted the promised nutty flavour to be just plain bitter! Few puffs later and I'm thinking I'm not going to finish this!

3/4 of the way through and its started to change. The bitterness subsided and mellow flavours started to develop and a nice lip tingle.

Disappointingly, the wrapper came off with about a 1/4 to go. The burn was uneven all the way and it rippled around the top, maybe a sign of poor construction??? Hell I dont know, I'm new to this!

In conclusion, a cigar of 2 halves. Nice draw, but with uneven burn. Bitter going into mild. No sweetness as others have indicated on cgars reviews. Overall, disappointed with a well known name

I've another Upmann in the box, but a Corona Minor.....hope that's going to turn out better.

Is the deconstruction to do with my cutting? Are longer cigars better because you get more of the good bit? Any thoughts?

Your review has all the signs of a cigar that is too wet, or has too rapid a change in humidity. Was this fresh from the shop or your humidor?

Yes, good review. Maybe you should try another to see if you had a bad stick, or whether it was sitting under bad conditions?

          hey bgwan,
nice review!!!! to be honest, the corona junior is an inexpensive cuban (approx ?5 around these parts), so one doesn't worry too much about poor burn or lack of complexity..........

however, i found your review pretty much spot on!!!! it's a nice little, light bodied, cigar..... great for those times when you don't have time for a bigger cigar but don't want to resort to cheap crap!!!!

also, to be honest, the h upmann corona minor isn't much different from the junior!!!! i definitely recommend you check out some of the bigger sized cigars suggested to you in a previous thread........ even the perlas/ half coronas (such as the monte 5, cohiba siglo 1, trinidad reyes etc) will offer you more in terms of flavour and overall smoking experience compared to the h upmann cigars you mentioned!!!!

          all the best mate,

          alex

Well, the storage may be something to do with it. Old cigar box with a Xikar DryMistat stick in it...no hygrometer so don't know. Without a proper humidor, wouldn't too dry be the biggest concern rather than too wet?

Well if you had a drymist stick it should be close enough as far as humidity so as mentioned next one let it sit out or dry box it .
And as far as the review BRAVO,BRAVO!

                Nice Review Bwgan.

Humidity does sound like the culprit. Yesterday, where I live in Essex the ambient humidity was 84?, if you smoke just a little to quickly in those conditions you can encounter problems. Especially if your cigar was a little over-humidified to begin with.
If you want to, you can.
And, if you can, you must!

Yes, very good review! Perhaps you should do another one after the second stick to see if there is a difference.

Thanks for an honest review. I too will say that this is not a premium stick and may have been a bad one but a weeks rest in less than ideal conditions may have more to do with your experience. Try resting a stick your going to review in a stable humidor for at least a month before you review it so as to give it a fair chance. Keep reviewing.
What would I know? I'm just a backwoods roo packin crim from New Holland! LOL. (Thankyou El Cat)

                        Thanks for the kind words!
I've sorted the humidor problem, bought one last night. Just need to read the setup advice from within this portal of knowledge and I'll be away.
I'll let the other Upmann rest a few days in an non-humified box and see what happens.
