    evening all,
just wanted to quickly share my thoughts on a contender for possibly the best cigar i've had this year, the cuaba piramides el2008!!!

i know that, when released, these cigars didn't get many favourable reviews!! i never experienced them when they were first released, because spending ?20 on a cigar was taboo to me, so i can't comment on that!!! however, i suspect that 2 years has made a hell of a difference with these........

after preparing myself by having a decent meal beforehand, since i was warned about it being a 'firey beast', i retired to my smoking lounge (the back garden) to burn this off!!! firstly, in my opinion, the example i was about to smoke this evening was a 'perfect' specimen!!! there were absolutely no visible flaws, no veins or no real variations in colour, it was very uniform!!! the construction was perfect, no soft or hard spots!! the aroma was amazing...... the typical sweet smell of maduro tobacco!!! the pre light draw was perfect with a lovely taste of sweet espresso, spice and dark chocolate!!! the aroma released when the foot was toasted was heavenly!!!! right away i knew i was in for a treat.......

right from the off, the flavours were fantastic!!! as i said, sweet espresso, spice and dark chocloate (like 90% lindt)!!! the smoke was plentiful, filling the cold evening air with a beautiful aroma (the neighbour even passed of a couple of positive comments)!!! i was in heaven, and i had only started!!!

after passing the first third with a perfect, straight burn, the ash (which was a lovely white colour) was still holding on tight!!!! always a good sign in my book, lol!!! new flavours seemed to be ebbing to the surface...... i definitely tasted something of nutmeg and salted peanuts!!! after the ash reached close to 2 inches, i tapped it off!!! amazing!!!! as the cigar reached the end of the second third, a lovely honey flavour started to come through!!!! all the flavours mentioned intensified, with non taking particular dominance!!!! this, for me, created a complex flavour profile!!! anyway, again, the ash held on firm for approximately 2 inches before i tapped it off!!! this was great, i can't remember when the last time was that happened (it was a partagas p2, i think)!!! i continued to smoke the thing right down till it burned my fingers, at which point i cursed myself for not having another........ but all good things must come to an end sadly!!!!!

all in all, this cigar was, simply put, amazing!!! everything about it, looks, taste, smell........ perfect!!!! it was quite a slow burner, which added to the great experience, it lasted about 1hr 30mins!!!! it wasn't the 'firey beast' i had been warned about (i'm used to smoking partagas and bolivars , so i'd say i'm used to strong cigars), it was definitely full bodied, but there was a refinement to it, if that makes sense!!! flavour and strength, IMO it's fair to say this cigar is not typical of the cuaba line (of which i'm a fan, they're medium bodied), it's more typical of a good bolivar!!! i'll definitely be visiting this one again for as long as i can get my hands on them......

btw, for any non believers or people who were put off by bad reviews, cast aside any doubts!!! take my word for it this, is a great cigar!!! still not convinced? send 'em to me!!!

    appearance (out of 15): 14

    total (out of 100): 94

I didn't like them much to begin with so I sold them to CohibaIV but it looks like I've jumped the gun because I'm hearing lots of good things about them...DOH!!!

                  What a great review.

I have always been a bit unsure about the Cuaba brand, don't know why. This one sounds like a great cigar so I will need to track some down.

                  Any other Cuaba recommendations?

                    hey prince mosely,
i'd certainly recommend the salamones, divinos and traditionales!!! as i said, the cuaba brand are 'rustic', medium bodied smokes, just lovely!!!! the salamones is a lovely, big, gentle giant!! here's a review i wrote not too long ago:

the other two are small cigars, they make a difference from my usual choice (i usually go for trini reyes, cohiba secretos, bolivar cj's, monte 5's, party shorts etc etc)!!!

                    hope this helps.......

Got two boxes of these in Cuba after I smoked one with monkey66 at Fox's. Gave one to T too who very much liked it. Definitely ready for smoking, and smoking well.
