  • Short Winter Smoke ? 4

    Romeo y Julieta Petit Princess
    Size: 102mm x 40 — Perla
    Smoke time: 38mins.

Cigar box date: Unknown. Been in my humi almost a year. Post 2008 Band.

Appearance: Attractive. Rich, toothy Colorado wrapper with the slightest hint of veridian patching, slightly oily and carrying few surface veins offset by the deep scarlet of the perfectly proportioned and embossed Standard ‘B’ band.

Construction: Excellent give at the band. Perfect, slightly resistive pre-draw. Good smoking draw. The burn was constant, it started straight and that’s how it finished. If the cigar had any fault, it was in the ash, which while ‘holding’ well, did look a little ragged at times.

Flavour: The pre-light is Autumnal smelling of musky wood and rich tobacco. The smoke starts with the usual crisp Cuban zest and flourish of sherbert lemon which is quickly and nicely balanced by light, flavoursome woody backnote. The smoke — which is creamy and with very little back-venting — is aromatic pine and cedar. At one third, the taste whilst still fresh and woody takes on notes of chocolate, vanilla and dried fruits. The added sweetness does not however detract from the overall manly flavour and the smoke in retro-hale still delivers the tones of carpentry/woodshop. In the final third the flavour richens and the woodiness becomes more prominent. I could detect no pepper, but did get the bonus of not being able to detect any ammonia either, and as you can see, I smoked it untill my shivering fingers had nothing more to hold on to. Delicious, if only they could be a bit bigger!

Overall: Peerless. Rated 8.4, the little princess holds the crown in the Perla size. It’s one of my favourite small smokes and IMHO no humi or BOTL beginner or Aficinado should be without a few at this time of Year.

Nice review, i have migrated away from smaller cigars in favour of something with a bit of girth and lit up some cohiba minis because of the cold while walking the dog but now they feel a bit on the small side. Might have to give these a go and rekindle my love for smaller cigars.
