  • Short Winter Smoke ? 5

Garcia & Garcia ? My Father Le Bijou 1922
    Size: 4 1/2 ins x 52 ? Petit Robusto
    Origin: Nicaragua
    Wrapper: Nicaraguan Habana Oscuro
    Filler/Binder: Nicaragua
Smoke time: 1 hour 15 mins

Cigar box date: Unknown. This cigar is the only one of the vitola I have and was gifted in by Mr Shuckins in one of his ?obliterations?. I picked on it today as the weather was a little milder and OK for a slightly longer smoke.

Appearance: Oscuro is a pretty good word, because initially you can?t really see much of the rich, dark brown, beautifully oily wrapper because it?s hidden by two ? very highly detailed and embossed ? sentimentally attractive looking bands. (I hope Tupack is around to confirm just how well they are printed).

Construction: The cigar felt firm to the hand and very densely packed. The give along the entire length was like that of a good quality pencil rubber, (that?s, eraser US BOTL, not what you?re thinking!). One snip with my Mr Rokkit supplied, trusty CC cuter and the triple cap popped off as easy as anything. The pre-light aroma is a heady delight of pungent tobacco and rich dark chocolate.
The pre-draw delivered a bonus surprise, not only was it easy, I got a delicious mouth coating of saltiness before I?d even reached for my lighter. The burn and ash stayed steady throughout the smoke with no re-lights or correction required. If there was a down-point, it was only in one small wrapper tear as the result of my removing the first band. I was a lot more careful with the second.

Flavour: The smoke from the cigar is amazing, it?s generous without being overwhelming and carries mild pepperiness in the aroma. The My Father opens on wood with a hint of coffee and cocoa to the fore with an almost Carnation milklike creamy sweetness as a back note. In a bit, and delicious peppers hit the tongue and tingle around the roof of the mouth. The pepper in the flavour mix becomes stronger as the third progresses. Mid point and the cigar really lets go, adding a lightness to the wood to balance the sweet cream, wood, and substantial spice which is then followed in by raw, dark chocolate and cocoa notes. Then, whoa momma, the final third. Everything kicks-in, all the spice and every flavour floating in a release of sweet cocoa. Delicious!

Overall: RESPECT. To be honest I wished I?d saved it now. I can envisage smoking this cigar on a perfect Summer?s afternoon, with a good book, a glass of iced lemon and nothing else to do but enjoy it. Heaven. For me, and from my novice perspective anyway, the NC v CC debate is over. I haven?t smoked all the CC Robustos yet, but the My Father Bijou 1922 is easily on par with those that I have.

I have one of them lurking in at the bottom of one of my NC desk tops...

Might be worth a try then...
