Cigar: H.Upmann Magnum 48 2009 Edicion Limitada

Cigar box age: 2009. Bought in a Forum Sale from Lee Nub.
Appearance: Double banded, stout and rustic. Rich brown wrapper with thick veining creating an almost marbled surface. The prominent triple cap is very neatly applied.
Construction: Easy pre-light draw with a effortless smoking draw throughout. Absolutely no problems burnwise, and the ash remained so well compacted it would hardly budge and had to be really welted to tap it off. Two tap offs. No re-lights and no corrections.
Flavour: The pre-light aroma was for me tobacco and light wood, but I do have a slight head cold so I may been a bit ?out? there. The initial flavour is a deliciously subtle variation on the usual Cuban prelude in that the citrus tones have a dry, bitter-sweet quality. The smoke is ample rather than billowing and retains a soft, creamy texture start-to-finish. A half inch or so in and clean and varying woodnotes enter the mix and then swirling occasionally through came a light sugar which gradually, and for the remainder of the first third, combined with the woods to create what I?m going to call ?sugar-wood? and was absolutely delightful. At two thirds the wood notes start to ?pick-up? but still with a hint of sugar floating over the top. The flavour strength at this point was amazing (though the best was still to come) and the tobacco strength mild to medium. Halfway through and the Magnum suddenly took-off into a refined larder of dark chocolate, tea, brown sugar and caramel which complimented but never totally overpowered the proceeding taste structure. Imperceptively the tobacco strength, which up to around the two third mark had been on auto, quietly slipped up-a-gear, but smoothly without any harshness or discomfort. From around the brand band down the flavour became earthy with all the woodiness in the base much more richly toned while in retro-hale light pepper was an added bonus to be enjoyed and savored. Amazing!
Overall: Brilliant cigar and smart forward thinking by all Forum BOTL who have a box squirreled away, because I think these are coming into their ?time? now. Sadly I?ve one now left, but fully intend to pick up more while it?s still possible. Newbee BOTL or those who haven?t yet purchased a Mag 48 yet, I seriously recommend that you do ? before they?re all gone!
